OCTOBER LETTER TO THE UNITED PARISH Canon Ivy writes from The Rectory, Park Road, Little Easton 01371 872509 ivycrawford@btinternet.com There is so much to include in my letter this month. The Countess of Warwick’s Country Show was again a most wonderful success in bringing people together. I am enormously grateful, as are the church members, to the organising committee and the dozens of people who participated. We do not yet know what the profits from the show are, but we do know that they are much needed for the ongoing upkeep of the four churches in the parish. You may have read in the Show programme what our maintenance bills have been so far this year and more money has to be spent in the near future. On the 2nd and 3rd October from 12noon to 5pm Tilty Church is holding its annual and popular Flower Festival, with the theme of “Anniversaries”. There will be a country market, light lunches, teas and cakes. On Sunday morning at 11am we will be having our service of worship with something for all ages. We look forward to welcoming you over the weekend. On the 6th October at 10am in Great Easton Church, Great Easton School is having its Harvest Festival Service, and our Harvest Celebrations continue on the 17th October in Little Easton Church at 11am with a service for all ages. This year we are combining to give our support to USPG, Anglicans in World Mission. The churches in The Five Parishes have given financial support to this organisation for many years, and the Church Council agreed that we would increase our support by promoting its Harvest Festival Project. This organisation works in over 50 countries to help strengthen and build communities through healthcare, education, leadership training and action for social justice, thus helping poor communities to reach their full potential and grow to support themselves. The School will focus on a community project in Villa Felicidad, a small settlement on the outskirts of Progreso in Uruguay, learning about life there, and at Little Easton we will focus on the work in Tanzania. Projects to date have included cookery workshops, kitchen gardens, the refurbishment of a health clinic and a train station, a bread oven and a basketball court. USPG has also helped set up vegetable garden and cookery classes in the local primary school to show children how to grow nutritious food and eat healthily. The result has been an enriched school curriculum and a strengthening of bonds among the church, school and community. USPG also offers training so people can start small agricultural projects, such as a piggery, raising chickens, vegetable gardens, and tree planting schemes. Students are taught practical skills such as farming, carpentry and tailoring. Sisters run mother and child clinics, the setting up and running of kindergartens. The offering at both our 9am and 11am services on the 17th will be sent to USPG. Our support will be greatly valued and wisely used to help others become self sufficient, which is an important aspect of caring for one another. £8 could help pay for a back-to-school kit for a young person £10 could buy 5 HIV test kits in sub-Saharan Africa £300 could help pay the salary of a community worker in Uruguay for a month £400 could help resource a medical team with vital equipment in Myanmar On the 31st October we are holding our annual Service to remember in love those who have died - 3.30 pm at Tilty Church. In our prayers I will read out the names of those we remember, and candles will be lit. I look forward to welcoming you at these services. At the end of October/early November we will be inviting the community of the Five Parishes to join with Great Easton School in supporting the Shoebox appeal. This is the world’s largest children’s Christmas project sending gifts in shoeboxes to some of the toughest parts of the world. For the majority of recipients, they receive no other presents. I will write more about this in the November magazine. Visit www.operationchristmaschild.org.uk or pick up a leaflet from the back of each church to find out more. Thank you for your ongoing support. STANSTED AIRPORT EXPANSION PROPOSALS Life after SSE Chairman Peter Sanders says consideration will be given to the establishment of a successor organisation to SSE, under the umbrella of its parent organisation, to carry on representation of the community to ensure that the cessation of SSE would not compromise the community’s need for continued representation, aimed at containing the environmental and community impacts of a single runway Stansted Airport. Even without a second runway – and despite experiencing a 21% decline in passenger numbers over the past three years – Stansted is still the UK’s third largest airport. They will be consulting in the autumn but meanwhile would be interested in the views of members and the wider community. Is there a need for a successor organisation and, if so, what should be its terms of reference/priorities/name? Current Support SSE still needs members’ support as much as ever. Fundraising events will continue, details will follow of the Christmas Party and their Community Calendar and Christmas cards continue to be available. Massive Second Hand Booksale SSE will be holding a sale of 5,000 good quality second hand books at its Campaign Office on Saturday 6th November, 9.30am to 3pm. Most of the books will be priced at 50p for paperbacks and £1 for hardbacks. A wrapping service will be available if you’d like to offer them as gifts. Race Night For SSE Book Saturday 9th October now for a Supper and Race Night in aid of SSE in Broxted Village Hall. Full details can be found in the News for All Parishes section. NEWS FOR ALL PARISHES BISHOP OF CHELMSFORD We continue to pray for the new Bishop of Chelmsford as he prepares to take up office this autumn. This process commences on the 6th October with his Confirmation of Election by the Archbishop of Canterbury at St Mary-le-Bow, Cheapside. On the 11th November at Bishop Stephen’s Homage the new Bishop will be welcomed by Her Majesty The Queen. His Installation in Chelmsford Cathedral is on the 27th November. DONATION TO PAKISTAN The sum of £545 was raised at recent services for Christian Aid to help the flood victims of Pakistan. £22 provides a family with a week’s food and a plastic sheet for temporary shelter; £52 gives a hungry family vital emergency food for a month; £91 an all-season tent and plastic sheeting for longer-term shelter. THE COUNTESS OF WARWICK’S SHOW Thank You Another year has passed for the Countess of Warwick’s Show and the team would like to thank all those involved, especially all those people who came to visit our Show in support of The Five Parishes. They were delighted with the turn out and even with the slightly dubious weather the Show was as busy as ever. Thank you for being part of our Show and everyone looks forward to seeing you August Bank Holiday weekend next year! The website will soon be updated with this year’s pictures and write ups, so please continue to go on-line at www.countessofwarwickshow.org. Horticultural Marquee Joan Boulton writes: “We did not manage the record entries of last year but with nearly a thousand we put on a great show. The weather as always played a large part in the fruit and vegetable sections, with not a cabbage to be seen. Somehow in spite of the very dry weather the prize pumpkins just grew and grew, with Jodie Teather again winning the class, and a very fit looking John Perry made a welcome return to the winners circle for his vegetable collection and gladioli. Chris Rogers won the Bennett Potato Cup and Heather Rogers triumphed overall winning the trophy for the most points in the whole show. “Congratulations to Helen Perry, a newcomer, for her lovely appliqué picture of a local cottage and to Judy Barnard for her beautiful floral arrangement evoking a country, in this case France, voted the Best Exhibit in the show. In the Children’s Section, Louis Pickford grew an enormous pumpkin, Tia Jackson-Owens narrowly beat Emily Smith to win the Jack Filby Award for the most points in section and Rebecca Grymonprez won the cup for the best exhibit in the section with her magnificent model of a dinosaur. I just mention a few but all the winners of the trophies are on the show website www.countessofwarwickshow.org. “Every year we are supremely lucky that our judges generously give of their time and expertise and to them we send our heartfelt gratitude. Our thanks go to Jim and Jan Brown for again taking in the entries so efficiently and running their popular plant stall to support us. We are getting more organised for our produce sale and are truly grateful to the exhibitors who donate things for us to sell. To all our sponsors a huge Thank You – your generosity is much appreciated. Finally my sincere thanks go to each and every one of my incredible team; I simply could not manage without their unstinting support. Thank you all and I look forward to seeing you all again at the Show next year.” The Grand Draw Many thanks go to all those kind sponsors who donated prizes this year and also to the many people who bought tickets. Congratulations to the winners who were: 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th 9th 10th £1,000 cash: Anon, Duton Hill (ticket number 2007) £500 cash: Mrs Thomas, Gallows Green (4338) £250 cash: K Knight, North Weald (3700) Dining at The Starr: M Coates, Broxted (3367) Portable Audio Player: R Clark, Broxted (2622) Meal at The Saracen’s Head: T Davis, Chelmsford (2240) Voucher from The Green Man: Mrs Line, Dunmow (7157) Luckin’s case of Wines: T Pigram, Little Easton (214) Marks & Spencer Hamper: Mrs Benterman, Gt Easton (7119) Bottle of Champagne: Diane, Stebbing (4119) www.countessofwarwickshow.org Once again the website contributed greatly to the Show’s success. There was a short time when the site could not be accessed, the massive amount of traffic that hit the website having used all of the allotted bandwidth, despite it having been doubled from last year. It has now been doubled again and has more bandwidth allotted to it than any other site on the server. The traffic stats are impressive. For the week 23rd/ 29th August (that is up to Sunday night) they were: Total hits for the week: 7,147 with 2,165 being first time visitors. The stats for Monday were: Total hits: 1,319 with 417 being first time visitors. MOTHERS’ UNION The October meeting is on Wednesday 20th October at Easton Farm by kind permission of Mr Bob Trembath. The speaker will be the Revd Frances Drake who is the Chelmsford Diocesan Unit Co-ordinator for Action and Outreach. She will talk about the Mothers’ Union worldwide. This should be very informative and interesting. Non-members who would like to learn more are warmly invited to attend. There will be the usual cup of tea and cake; also a Bring-and-buy stall. More information from Clare on 01371 872640 or Molly on 01371 859822. THE FRIENDS OF THE FIVE PARISHES An Evening of Magic and Mystery Wow! The demand for tickets this year has been amazing: at the time of writing this article all tickets have been sold and a waiting list for cancellations has been prepared. Brian and Audrey know that many of you without tickets will be disappointed but they are, of course, restricted to numbers that the venue will hold. A suggestion has been made that perhaps in the future the event could possibly be run for two nights, Friday and Saturday. This will certainly be considered very carefully to ascertain if that is feasible. For those of you who will be attending, this is a gentle reminder that the colour scheme and fancy dress theme for the evening is ‘fantasy’ in pink, silver and black. Whilst this is not compulsory, it does add to the fun of the evening. Fabulous cash prizes for the winners, so let us have a good turn out once again. Don’t forget – Friday 29th October 7.15 pm for 7.45 pm in Great Easton Village Hall. Make ‘magic’ your friend in 2010 Christmas Cards and Cookbook At their stand at the Show The Friends introduced their new Christmas cards and Cookbook. An order form is enclosed for use by anyone wishing to make a purchase. Please note that where it is not possible to deliver an order by hand, a charge for postage will have to be made. THE FRIENDS OF THE FIVE PARISHES 50% CLUB You may have missed the first draw of the Club year but subscriptions are still welcome. RAISING THE ALARM ON SECURITY COLD CALLERS Our Neighbourhood Policing Team gives this warning from Essex County Council Trading Standards urging residents to be wary if they are contacted by a security company called Crime Research UK (or similar) saying that they are working with the Council on a ‘crime awareness week’. Residents are told they have been selected to receive a ‘free’ alarm system and are then urged to arrange a visit from a ‘security expert’ to discuss it further. The Council would like to make it clear that it is not working with Crime Research UK and residents are reminded to be vigilant of any cold callers, either over the telephone or at the doorstep. If you are interested in having an alarm installed at your home, you can find a Trading Standards approved trader by using the Buy with Confidence scheme at www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk or by calling Consumer Direct on 08454 040506. You can reduce the number of unsolicited telephone calls you receive by registering for the Telephone Preference Service on 08450 700707 or www.tpsonline.org.uk. PEOPLE BEST WISHES – To the Revd Teresa Wynne who was licensed as Priest-in-Charge of St Leonard’s Church, Lexden on the 12th September. GREAT EASTON CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL Where did the summer go? October already, rain, wind, falling leaves and wet playtimes are already upon us and we have only been back at school a few days! Our assembly themes for the autumn are ‘Famous People in the Bible’ and ‘Jesus’ Ancestors’ and every fortnight either Canon Ivy or Reverend Cilla will be sharing another story with the children. Adam and Eve, Noah, Moses, Jonah and David are some of the tales that will be shared. Right at the start of the month our Year 5 pupils (9 and 10 years old) and three staff will be spending three days at Danbury Outdoor Centre. During their stay the children will participate in a range of activities including canoeing, climbing, archery, mountain biking and hopefully sleeping during the two nights of their stay. As usual the majority of the children’s work this term is connected to a central topic. Our lower school pupils are looking at toys and during October they will be visiting the Museum of Childhood in London. Meanwhile our upper school pupils are travelling back in time to study the Romans and part of their work will involve a trip to Colchester Castle. However, the transport to Colchester will be provided by Don’s Coaches and not the Queen Boudicca Bladed Wheel Chariots that the children requested! As a result of the recent supermarket voucher scheme, our laptops all now have new headphones and mice attached and our outdoor play equipment box has been replenished with a range of balls, bats, hoops and games. Thank you to all of you who collected and sent in vouchers. An important sign that autumn is here is Harvest, and you are all welcome to join the school’s celebrations at Great Easton Church on Wednesday 6th October at 10am. WORLD ANIMAL DAY World Animal Day on the 4th October is not a recent addition to the calendar, it was started in 1931 at a convention of ecologists in Florence as a way of highlighting the plight of endangered species. Since then it has grown to encompass all kinds of animal life and is widely celebrated in countries throughout the world. The date was chosen as it’s the Feast Day of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals. It is intended as a day of celebration for everyone in the world who cares about animals and is not restricted to any one nationality, creed, religion, political belief or ideology. WOULDN’T IT BE LOVERLY? All I want is to walk clean streets Paths kept clear of the wraps from sweets A world so fine and neat Oh, wouldn’t it be loverly? Just to stroll on a pavement free From old Coke cans and such débris A sight so good to see Oh, wouldn’t it be loverly! Oh, so loverly walking with no bloomin’ care at all Unconcerned by rubbish left by some bloomin’ fool! They drink energy from a tin You’d think they’d have the strength within To reach the litter bin - Oh, wouldn’t it be loverly? No more wrappers from chocolate bars No more stuff they throw out of cars I’d have to live on Mars But wouldn’t it be loverly!? By Nigel Beeton Whose fault is it, anyway? In a small town a businessman put in planning permission to build a nightclub complete with dancing girls. The local church started a vigorous campaign to block it from opening, launching a petition and holding prayers in public. Work progressed, however, right up until the week before opening. Then one night a bolt of lightning strike hit the nightclub and it burned to the ground. The church members were rather smug after that, until the nightclub owner sued them all on the grounds that they were responsible for the fire. Loudly protesting their total non-involvement and innocence, the church members were all taken to court. As the case began, the judge looked over the paperwork and observed: “I don’t know how I’m going to decide this. It appears that we have a nightclub owner who believes in the power of prayer, and an entire church congregation that doesn’t!” If only Computer message I’d like to see: ‘Smash forehead on keyboard to continue’. Bow wow! "Doctor, I can hear all kinds of animals talk in my head." "Well, don't worry," said the doctor. "You're just having Disney spells." With Harvest in mind... ... it’s strange to me How very full the church can be With people I don’t see at all Except at Harvest Festival. by John Betjeman
