Job Summary
Each PAL is responsible, under the direction of the Curriculum Manager, for the line management of a
small group of academic staff.
In addition to the specific duties listed below, the Programme Area Leader will fulfil the role of a qualified
Lecturer, please see the Lecturer Job Description for full details.
The job description intends to incorporate within it the professional standards for Teachers and Trainers
in Education – England (2014).
Main Duties
1. To manage the quality of a suite of study programmes to achieve success at benchmark or above using
centrally held performance data.
2. To analyse programme performance data and provide self-assessment reports which identify clear
strategies for maintaining strengths and strengthening weaknesses.
3. To report as required in line with the college Quality performance requirements.
4. To manage a team of full, part time and sessional lecturers including agreeing key performance
indicators, completing their annual appraisal / six monthly review, managing their performance and
attendance / ensuring efficient and effective deployment. Ensuring complete compliance with all College
policies, procedures and protocols.
5. Managing / co-ordination of the internal verification and assessment processes.
6. Ensuring completion of student surveys.
7. Managing the student disciplinary process.
8. To advise the Curriculum Manager on the resource requirements for a suite of programmes and how
these resources can be effectively and efficiently utilised.
9. To design and deliver quality teaching / practical instruction using appropriate and effective methods with
enthusiasm, to cater for the needs of all students.
10.To monitor and assess student progress and provide prompt feedback to management, students, carers,
parents, guardians and employers as appropriate.
11.To maintain and develop technical competence within agreed subject areas.
12.To take an active role in curriculum development of existing and new course provision.

13.To play an active role in cross-college activities, including marketing which will include participating in
direct marketing events and the attendance at open days, welcome events and information sessions, to
promote the College.
14.To provide individual tutorial and pastoral care to students as and when required and to act as personal
tutor to identified students.
15.To ensure compliance with both legislative and College requirements for Health & Safety ensuring safe
systems of work are provided and risk assessments are completed in a timely manner.
16.To interview and provide careers guidance to prospective students and liaise
with students’ parents / guardians carers / /employers as necessary.
17..To actively commit to Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all students

This Job Description sets out the major duties associated with this post, it is assumed that other duties of

Conditions of Service
Programme Area Leader








Conditions of service will be based on those contained in the College’s Academic Contract.
Salary will be £28,236 per annum.
Hours of work will be 37 hours per week. The post holder will be expected to have a flexible
approach to working hours.
The person appointed has the right to take up the option of joining the Teachers’ Pension
Scheme. The College will assume that this is the case unless an opt-out form is completed
within the time limit allowed.
Annual leave entitlement will be 50 days per annum (pro-rata’d for part time employees)
which includes up to 5 days which the College may pre-determine and all bank holidays.
New entrants to the service are entitled to annual leave proportionate to the completed
months of service in a leave year, which runs from September to August.
The person appointed will be subject to a review period of no more than nine months.
During this time regular reviews will be undertaken and discussed with the employee.
