Walker Betty Wells Campbell & John Wester Kelly & William White Muriel Williams Liz & Brad Winer Nancy Zampieri 11 FRIENDS of the LIBRARY QUEENS UNIVERSITY of CHARLOTTE An Informal History by Kathryn Preyer The idea of forming a support group for Everett Library came from Kathryn Preyer’s participation on the board of the Friends Group at UNC-G and seeing, first hand, what community supports was engendered due to the interesting programs and library privileges that were offered to members. The librarian of Queens, Rose Anderson, was enthusiastic about the idea, as was Miss Thelma Albright, faculty member and former dean of students, and Dr. John Smiley, college president. A group of friends, some Queens’ alums and some not, were also interested; so, and an organizing meeting was held in April 1971 in what is now the Special Collections Room. Some one hundred people attended to hear short talks by the president, librarian, etc. to have coffee and cookies, and to sign up as Charter Members. Their enthusiasm was so exciting. The purpose in forming the Friends was, as explained to the original group, to focus attention on the Library as the center of learning on campus, to strengthen ties between Queens College and the Charlotte Community by planning events that would contribute to the cultural life of the city and bring people on campus, and to make useful gifts to the Library whenever possible-the “icing on the cake”. Officers were appointed by Dr. Smiley with Helen Jones president. A strong Board was picked, also, and plans were made for the first Book and Author Luncheon followed by the Annual Meeting in the spring. Both events were successful, and we succeeded in attracting many members. By the tenth anniversary dinner, with Charles Kurault as speaker, the membership was over nine hundred! The highest point was over one-thousand in 1992. Looking back over the forty-four years of existence and remembering all the meetings, parties for authors, receptions for patrons, coffee, book reviews, and especially the busy times of Book and Author Events, part of the purpose has been fulfilled. Thousands of people have been on Queens’ campus to hear over 10 authors at the Book and Author Event, and over 70 other authors for readings, Annual Dinner speakers, Fall Events, etc. Through these programs, we have offered a platform for the wellknown writer as well as the novice, and we have enjoyed and learned from all of them. Gifts to the Library, the “icing on the cake,” have been based on the special needs as recommended by the librarian to the Board. Books for browsing have been an item in the budget, as have carpeting, refurbishing the student lounge, microfiche readers, etc. Though not a fund-raising organization, we have contributed through the years to special challenges for a grand total of $751, 374.74 between 1971 and 2011. Some projects included: - $25,000 to help construct the Rena Harrell Special Collections Room, $4,000 to complete the Media Center $12,000 for refurbishing the reading area of the Library $9,500 for equipment for the audio-visual center $125,000 for books for Library accreditation (a twentieth anniversary gift) 12 The Everett Library Endowment Fund, consisting of eight funds, totals $105,000+ and the income is used for books. All of this has been accomplished by hard-working, dedicated boards over the years. The various talents and strengths of the board members have been generously given for the benefit of the library, and have been greatly appreciated by Queens College (since 2002, known as Queens University of Charlotte). Also, the loyalty of the members must not be forgotten, for without them, there would be no Friends. Mrs. Kathryn Preyer is a founding board member, past president, and benefactor. Mrs. Preyer has served as director and advisor to this board and her all-encompassing service is unparalleled. 13 FRIENDS of the LIBRARY QUEENS UNIVERSITY of CHARLOTTE BY LAWS ( ARTICLE I PURPOSES The Friends of the Library (“the Friends”) at Queens University of Charlotte was formed by a group of men and women in the Charlotte area who love books. Clark It became evident in 2001 that a Book and Author Endowment was needed to help with the expenses of bringing noted authors to our program. The basis of the Endowment was the memorials that were given to Everett Library in memory of Beverly Clark, the past chair of the Book and Author event. Members 29 of the Friends of the Library Board of Directors and the Advisors were approached individually to make donations to the Endowment. Individual letters were sent to the membership of the Friends of the Library. At the end of the campaign, an anonymous donor gave a substantial gift in Beverly Clark’s memory. At the request of the anonymous donor, the money that was given by the donor is put into a separate Book and Author Endowment account. If the Book and Author Endowment is ever dissolved, the donor has designated what is to be done with that donation. Over $100,000 was raised during the campaign, including the Beverly Clark Book and Author Endowment. The income from the Book and Author Endowment is to be used exclusively for speakers’ honorariums and /or travel expenses. Unused income from any year is to remain in the spending account of the Endowment for future use. Beginning March 2003, one of the speakers at each Book and Author Event was designated as the Beverly D. Clark Speaker, in honor or our special friend. Each year approximately five percent of the three-year rolling average of the Endowment is put into a spending account, which does not accrue interest. Money that is not spent in one year can accrue to be spent at a later date. It is homed that on special occasions/anniversaries accrued earnings can be used to bring in someone really special for our Book and Author events. Tax-deductible contributions can be made to the Book and Author Endowment by writing a check payable to FOL Book and Author Endowment and mailed to: Queens University of Charlotte Everett Library 1900 Selwyn Avenue Charlotte, NC 28274 30
