Key Working Relationships:
Registered nurses, registered therapists, therapy assistants and supporting staff. Also Marillac
housekeepers, laundry staff, catering staff, maintenance staff and administration staff. Resident’s
representative and key family/friends
Job Summary:
To provide personal care to younger adults with physical and neurological disabilities. Delivering
Personal care is considered a vital service in which you will be required to help residents with their
toileting, hygiene, washing and dressing and mobility requirements.
To work as an integral member of the care staff at The Marillac in accordance with policies and
procedures, offering each resident such support as is necessary to promote their individual
lifestyle and choices.
To achieve this you will need to:
1. Take a person centred approach to your work with the individuals you support:
 Ensuring their privacy and dignity of the individuals you support
 Find out their history, preferences, wishes and needs
2. Work according to Marillac procedures and the General Social Care Council (GSCC) Codes of
Practice in delivering care to people with neurological disabilities.
3. Work towards gaining competency in recording basic observations of temperature, pulse
and respirations, also competency in mouth care, skin care, tracheostomy care, catheter and
bowel care. Competency in the administration of medication, management of PEG feeding,
airway management with regard to seizures, and understanding swallowing difficulties will
be encouraged

Be instructed in your work by a registered nurse who will offer you supervision and training.
Understand your role in relation to The Marillac aims, values and behaviours.
Use an individual’s care plan when providing support.
To provide and receive sensitive/confidential information.

Have a duty of care to work in a healthy and safe manner.
Be informed and trained in all aspects of Health & Safety relevant to your role.
Understand the main routes of infection spread and how to prevent cross infection.
Comply with security systems to maintain the safety of all who live and work here.
Report any concerns about standards of care to Unit / Night Managers.
Resident Care Responsibilities.

2. To apply Marillac policies and procedures about sharing confidential information.
3. To recognise and report signs of ill health or significant changes in health and well being of
the people you support.
4. Recognise and report situations where there might be need for protection of vulnerable
adults.
5. Assist colleagues in providing interventions and or treatments.
6. Prepare snacks and drinks in a hygienic manner
7. To be Key Worker to one or more residents.
8. To participate in the arrangements for residents to enjoy sociable activities.
9. To undertake passenger assistance when travelling in vehicle.
10. To accompany residents on outings
Personal Development
1. To complete Marillac Induction programme.
2. To attend Marillac orientation programmes and mandatory training sessions and annual
updates.
3. To contribute to your own personal development plan.
4. To make changes in own practice and offer suggestions for improving services.
5. To participate in supervision sessions by taking an active part in agreed learning activities.
6. To be appraised at least annually to meet Marillac Objectives.
7. To undertake vocational training in care when partnership is offered by Marillac.
8. To assist in maintaining own and others health, safety and security.
9. To work between units if required to do so.
10. To keep line manager informed of any changes in your own circumstances which may affect
your work, which includes details of other employment.
11. To follow Marillac policies and procedures as made known to you in the Staff handbook and
policy folder.
12. To regularly attend and participate in Staff Meetings.

Additional Duties
It is the nature of the work of The Marillac that tasks and responsibilities are, in many circumstances,
unpredictable and varied and may include evening and weekend working. All staff are, therefore,
expected to work in a flexible way when tasks not specifically in their job description have to be
undertaken. These additional duties will normally be to cover unforeseen circumstances or changes in
work, and they will normally be compatible with each member of staff’s regular type of work. If the
additional responsibility or task becomes a regular or frequent part of the member of staff’s job, it
will be included in the job description, after consolation with that member of staff.
