Read and annotate carefully, Melville’s “Bartleby, the Scrivener” (The Story and Its Writer,
p.531-36). We will have an essay to write about this piece. So, make sure you thoughtfully
annotate your reading as we have practiced in class. Annotating is the first step in finding a
worthwhile topic for a thesis.
Monday (11/1)
Read the handout titled “keeping a journal” that you received with the literary analysis package.
Find and define the words on the vocabulary handout.
Tuesday (11/2)
Read about journaling in The Story and Its Writer, pp. 1070-71. Write a journal entry for the
reading tonight: “Bartleby, the Scrivener” (The Story and Its Writer, p.537-542).
Wednesday (11/3)
Practice brainstorming on ” Bartleby.” “Brainstorming – the free jotting down of ideas- asks that
you jot down at length whatever comes to mind” (An Introduction to literature, 11th ed. P. 11,12).
Reading tonight: “Bartleby, the Scrivener,” p. 542-547.
Thursday (11/4)
HW: Finish reading ” Bartleby.”
On page 1073 of The Story and Its Writer, read the paragraph that precedes “Narrowing Ideas to
a Thesis,” as well as “Narrowing Ideas” (p. 1073-4), “Writing and Revising” and “developing a
Thesis” (p. 1074-7).
Friday (11/5)
You have annotated, created journal entries, brainstormed, and completed a free writing. In other words,
you have used many different methods to generate a topic for your paper. Now it is time to choose a topic
and write a thesis for your paper.
You will have a vocabulary quiz on Bartleby on Tuesday next week.
Monday (11/8)
Meet in Timkin to revise thesis.
At home, go back to ” Bartleby” and gather evidence that supports your thesis.
Tuesday (11/9)
Complete the Literary Analysis Essay Outline template provided after our first paper.
Wednesday (11/10)
Write the first draft of your essay. Print and bring to class.
Thursday (11/11)
Make changes to your introductory paragraph based on today’s workshop, and complete the
revision process.
Friday (11/12)
Proofread your paper, eliminate all errors and print a copy for submission.
