Lesson 2-9 Notes Scientific Notation Scientific Notation A shorthand for writing numbers with a large number of digits 1.8 x 104 is 180000 written is scientific notation A number written is scientific notation must be a number from 1 – 9 multiplied by a power of 10. Translating Scientific Notation to Standard Notation Look at the exponent. A positive exponent means move the decimal to the right. A negative exponent means move the decimal to the left. 2.64 x 107 = 26,400,000 1.35 x 10-4 = .000135 -5.8 x 106 = -5,800,000 Translating Standard Notation to Scientific Notation 1) Move the decimal to make a number between 1 and 10. 2) Set up scientific notation. A number times a power of 10 3) If you start with a decimal your exponent will be negative. 4) If you start with a whole number your exponent will be positive Examples 0.000002 =2 x 10-6 4,890,000 = 4.89 x 106 Classwork – pg 98 – (1-9)
