Some Series Themes: There is no question that Arizona can really hit the ball as they have the third-best team
batting average in the Pac-12 (.302) … Along with the third-best batting average, the Wildcats have scored the
second-most runs (50) in the conference, only trailing national title contender Oregon State … Cal State Fullerton
has pitched well so far as they have allowed just 13 runs in 57 innings, so Wednesday will be a classic matchup
of strength vs. strength … Alfonso Rivas III was scorching hot this weekend as he went 9-15 with seven RBI, a
double and a home run. Rivas will look to continue his hot streak as he will surely be a staple in the lineup for the
near future … Cesar Salazar made a strong pitch to be Arizona’s everyday catcher as he went 6-11 with two RBI
at the Tony Gwynn Classic, including a big pinch-hit double against San Diego State on Monday … Bobby Dalbec
showed some flashes of what he can do this weekend. Even though he only had three hits, two of them were
well-hit doubles … Zach Gibbons had a good week of practice prior to the Tony Gwynn Classic, and it showed as
he was 6-12 with two RBI and two doubles. Gibbons has been solid all year and the coaching staff is looking for
him to be a model of consistency … It wasn’t first-weekend Cody Ramer, but the senior infielder still came up
big with a double and a triple this past weekend. His batting average dropped to .387 after going 4-15, but he
did score seven runs for the Wildcats … Louis Boyd came up with the game-winning hit on his first-career hit on
Saturday and then earned the start on Sunday. Boyd has been stellar defensively and made a serious pitch to be in
the lineup everyday as he made a few outstanding plays at shortstop … JJ Matijevic has been consistent as he is
in the middle of a five-game hitting streak, but everyone seems to be waiting for him to break out as he has loads
of potential. The 2B/DH is batting .357 in the first seven games this season … Ramer, Gibbons and Ryan Aguilar
(hit his first-career home run on Saturday and went 5-12) have reached base in every game so far this year. That
is a recipe for success as those three will more than likely be in the top four of the lineup … Pitching has been an
issue for Jay Johnson and the Wildcats as they have a team ERA of 6.20, 11th in the conference … It is early, but
JC Cloney (3.95) and Bobby Dalbec (1.23) are the only two Wildcats to have an ERA under 5.00 with at least seven
innings pitched … Kevin Ginkel showed some flashes of brilliance on Sunday as he entered the game with no outs
and a runner on third with Arizona down by one run in the top of the seventh. He was able to strike out the first two
batters he faced and got the third out on a line drive to right field … Cal State Fullerton has a batting average of
.212, so Wednesday’s game is a good opportunity for the pitching staff to keep the momentum going after a good
showing on Sunday.
Arizona Head Coach Jay Johnson: Arizona is coached by Jay Johnson, who is in his first year at the helm for the
Wildcats. Previously, Johnson spent two years at the University of Nevada, where he went 72-42 and made one
postseason appearance. The Wolf Pack were Mountain West Champions for the first time in school history in 2015
and Johnson was also named 2015 Mountain West Coach of the Year after Nevada went 41-15 with an appearance
in the NCAA Regionals. His only other head coach gig came back in 2005 when he was the head coach of Point Loma
Nazarene. He led them to a 37-14 record and made the postseason. Possibly his most notable coaching highlight is
the fact that he was able to get rising star and current Chicago Cub Kris Bryant to play his college ball for San Diego,
which is where Johnson was an assistant coach at the time. Bryant went on to become the No. 2 overall pick in the
2013 draft. Johnson also helped sign the No. 1 recruiting class in 2008 and the No. 2 class in 2010 at San Diego.
In the summer of 2015, Johnson hired Dave Lawn, Sergio Brown and Marc Wanaka as assistant coaches. He also
brought on Ray McIntire, Jimmy Van Ostrand and Michael Bradshaw to complete the staff.
Tony Gwynn Classic Recap: It was an exciting weekend at the inaugural Tony Gwynn Classic, that’s for sure.
On Friday, Arizona lost in a 21-run slugfest to Tulane by a score of 11-1. Arizona scored three runs in the seventh
inning to tie the game at 10, but Tulane scored one in the bottom of the eighth on a home run, which proved to
be the game-winner. Arizona bounced back on Saturday in yet another 21-run game. This time Arizona came out
on top as they defeated Nebraska 11-10 in 10 innings. Alfonso Rivas III exploded for five hits and was a triple shy
of the cycle. Louis Boyd had the game-winning hit in the top of the 10th. Sunday’s game only had 10 runs scored
between the Wildcats and San Diego State, but seven of those runs came in the last three innings of the game. The
Wildcats scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 7-2 lead, which would be enough for Rio Gomez
preserve the victory.
Arizona vs. Cal State Fullerton: The Wildcats and Titans are familiar with each other as Wednesday’s game will
be the 100th time the two teams have clashed … The last time the two teams face each other was back in early
March of 2010 … Fullerton came to Tucson for a three-game series, and Arizona took two of three from the Titans
… Arizona has struggled throughout the years against Fullerton as the Titans have a record of 35-64 against the
Wildcats since they first met in 1973 … The two teams have also met in the postseason. The last time was back in
2005 when the Titans hosted a regional. They faced each other three times with Fullerton winning the final two
games and advanced to the Super Regional.
2016 Arizona Baseball ❖ Official Game Notes ❖ Arizona @ Arizona Diamondbacks ❖ Mar. 1 ❖ Scottsdale, Ariz. ❖ Salt River Fields
Ayeeee Fonzy: Alfonso Rivas III was named Pac-12 Player of the Week on Tuesday after going 9-15 with seven RBI, four runs scored, a home run and a double … He went 5-6 with three singles, a double and a home
run and four RBI in Saturday’s 11-10 win against Nebraska … The freshman is the first Wildcat this season to have a five-hit game and a four-RBI game … Five hits also tied the Arizona record for the most hits in
one game … Rivas is second in the conference in batting average (.476.), fourth in slugging pct. (.667),
is tied for sixth with seven RBI and is tied for seventh with fellow Wildcat Ryan Aguilar in on base pct. (.500).
Gibby Gibby Gibby, Can’t You See: Senior outfielder Zach Gibbons moved up to the three hole last weekend and
flourished in that role … In the three games this weekend, he went 6-12 with three runs scored, two RBI and two
doubles … As long as Gibbons can keep up that production, look for him to stay at that spot in the lineup.
Ramer’s Rampage: Senior middle infielder Cody Ramer cooled down a bit this weekend, but is still batting .387,
which is second on the team and 11th in the Pac-12 … His 12 total hits and eight runs scored is tied for third in
the conference … Ramer went 4-15 with seven runs scored, a double and a triple .. Ramer figures to stay at the
top of the lineup.
Salazar Makes His Case: Freshman catcher Cesar Salazar also had himself a week at the dish for Arizona at the
Tony Gwynn Classic and made a serious case to be the everyday starter for Arizona … He started the first two
games of the series and pinch hit for Jared Oliva in the third game and went 6-11 with a double and two RBI …
Salazar came up clutch in crucial situations for Arizona and was solid behind the plate as well … Went 3-4 against
Nebraska on Sunday.

Getting off to a Good Start: Arizona has scored first in all but one game this season (Nebraska got on the board
first last Friday). While it seems like scoring first would lead to success, Arizona is just 3-3 when scoring first and is
1-0 when the opponent scored first.
Love That Eighth Inning: The eighth inning has been good to Arizona this year as 14 of their 50 runs have come
in the eighth inning … Also, when Arizona is 3-0 when leading after the eighth … Arizona scored eight of those
14 runs in the eighth inning of the Nebraska and San Diego State games.
Cloney Stays Persistent: After struggling in the opening game against Tulane (only faced six batters and allowed four runs on four hits), junior LHP JC Cloney started Sunday’s game and was solid. He lasted six full innings
and allowed just one earned run on eight hits. Cloney figures to be a staple in the starting rotation this year.
Going Streaking: Ryan Aguilar, Zach Gibbons and Cody Ramer have reached base in all seven games this season
… JJ Matijevic is in the midst of a five-game hitting streak. During his hitting streak, Matijevic is batting .476 with
ten hits, one double and three RBI … Gibbons and Ramer are also working on a four game hitting streak.
Clutch City, Arizona: Arizona has been outstanding at the plate with two outs this year … The Wildcats are hitting 29-87 (.333) with two outs and have 21 two-out RBI … Cody Ramer leads the way for Arizona as he is batting 7-10 with six RBI with two outs … Arizona has had a man on third base with less than
one out 21 times this year. Arizona has a success rate of .571 of driving the runner in in those situations.
Dalbec in the National Spotlight: Junior 3B/RHP Bobby Dalbec has collected a flurry of preseason honors this
winter. Along with being named to five preseason All-American teams, he was also named to the 2016 Golden
Spikes Award Preseason Watch List. Dalbec is one of 50 players to be named to the watch list. D1 Baseball also
listed Dalbec as the 18th-best prospect in the country. Here is a list of the honors he has received.
• Louisville Slugger
• Perfect Game
• D1 Baseball
• Baseball America
• Hero Sports
Dual-Threat Dalbec: It’s been a struggle for Bobby Dalbec through the first two weeks of the season
... Through seven games, he is batting .138 with 14 strikeouts … He did show some flashes of what he
can do this weekend though as he had two well-hit doubles … Dalbec has done well on the mound so
far though … He has factored into the decision in all three appearances and is 2-1 with an ERA of 1.23
… In 7.1 innings, he has struck out five batters and has allowed just one run, which was a home run.

What Rotation?: One question that is asked to every coach in America is, “What does your starting rotation look
like?” Jay Johnson has made it known that there may not be a “rotation” during this entire year, and that the coaching staff will go with whoever has the hot hand. There are some guys on this team that do have experience starting
in an Arizona uniform though.
• Tyler Crawford – 20 starts
• Austin Schnabel – nine starts
• Nathan Bannister – eight starts
• Robby Medel – eight starts
• Bobby Dalbec – seven starts
• Cody Moffett – four starts
• JC Cloney - three starts
• Rio Gomez – one start
• Cameron Ming - two starts
• Michael Flynn - one start
The Friendly Confines: It seems like yesterday that Greg Byrne decided to move the Wildcats about four miles
east. Hard to imagine that Arizona is entering its fifth season at Hi Corbett, but time flies when you have one of the
best atmospheres in college baseball. Arizona has a record of 98-54 while playing at Hi Corbett over the last four
seasons, while having some incredible attendance numbers as well. No matter how the season is going, the fans
show out. Here are some attendance numbers that are worth noting.
• 400,747 – Total attendance last four seasons
• 105,131 – Attendance for 2012 season
• 103,877 – Attendance for 2013 season
• 95,973 – Attendance for 2014 season
• 95,964 – Attendance for 2015 season
• 14,055 – Highest three-game series total (vs. Arizona State; May 25-27, 2012)
• 5,677 – Largest crowd (vs. Arizona State; May 26, 2012)
• 2,628 – Average attendance at home games in 2012
• 2,733 – Average attendance at home games in 2013
• 2,520 – Average attendance at home games in 2014
• 2,665 – Average attendance at home games in 2015
The Return of GrandCrawther: There is only one member of this Arizona team that was on the 2012 National
Championship team, and that is LHP Tyler Crawford, or as his teammates like to call him, GrandCraw. The 23-year
old missed the 2015 season due to Tommy John surgery and Jay Johnson is counting on Crawford to have a strong
