Masaki&Aaron's tales – Part 2 Even if Masaki is trying hard to do nothing, Aaron doesn’t seem to agree his purposes… Let’s see who’s going to win… Write only with black or blue pen, things written with pencil will not be considered. Read the exercises carefully. Show your work and circle your answer. Exercise 1 ( 7 points ): Aaron asked Masaki to teach his class which are the most useful units of measure. Masaki was really proud of his lecture but something strange happened. One of the students e-mailed to Aaron asking how to compute the area of a room that is: 32 bears and 5 grains times 26 bears and 18 grains. Aaron: “What’s this???” Masaki: “Well, the English unit of length is just from the measurement of a king's foot… I’m no less distinguished than he was, so I created new units with the lengths of my first teddy bear and grains of rise, of course my favorite dish!” Aaron: “You’re going to make my students mad of me! Send them back an e-mail with the “normal” area, now!” Find the area if : 1 bear = 30 cm; 1 grain = 5 mm. Exercise 2 (4 points): Aaron: “I know that you are really busy so I found something nice for you. Can you write the solutions for the homework? You need to convert all the percentages decimals and fractions, can you do that?” Masaki: “??? A percentage is not a number… it has a unit of measure, it measures “%”!!! You’re not as smart as you claim…” Aaron: “…please… help!” Percentage: 10% Decimal: 0.1 Fraction: 1/10 17.23% 1.312 7/13 Exercise 3 (6 points): Aaron: “Masaki, what are you doing?? You had to grade the homework by yesterday!” Masaki: “I’m doing my research! I need to meet my advisor in three months and I’m busy. Get away from here!” Aaron: “I think that 2/3 of your brain is empty. Of what remains, 20% is sawdust and 50% is in standby… only a very small percentage is working. Do you know what I mean?” Masaki: “I’m a little confused by all these numbers… Which percentage of my brain is working??? I don't understand!!!” Find the percentage of Masaki's brain that is actually working. Exercise 4 (5 points): Masaki: “Aaron, you know that in Japan there are 127,433,494 inhabitants? And you know that we eat an average of 155,500 grains each per day? That’s amazing!” Aaron: “Oh, I’m surprised… not really, I don’t care! Go away…” Masaki: “Why are you so mean to me” Aaron: “I’m not… apart from the fact that you’re just chatting all day long” Masaki: “We could ask our students to compute the average of grains of rise used per decade in Japan… You see, I’m too efficient!” (Find it using the correct scientific notation. What is the magnitude of the final value?) NAME……………………………………….. ID………………………………………..
