FORMULA JUNIOR NEWSLETTER
Newsletter #130 December 2006
Mugello is a 5 Kilometre long Mountain Circuit with sweeping open bends, owned by
Ferrari, and used by the F1 cars as well as Fiorano (Maranello) as a test track. It is by far the best and most awe inspiring track in Italy, and this year for the first time, or certainly since the 1980’s, Formula Junior have a chance to race there, along with Masters, Sports
Cars, TGP and Orwell Super Sports (and of course the Shell Ferrari Historic Challenge.)
Here are a couple of photographs to water the taste buds, whilst full details on the track can be found at www.mugellocircuit.it
.
Circuit admission will be from 2pm Thursday;. There will be 2 races, and 2 dedicated 30 minutes FJ practices, and based on the provisional timetable, the first on the usual pay basis, on Friday Morning, and the second for qualifying in the afternoon. Race 1 will be
Saturday pm and Race 2 at Midday on Sunday.
Friday evening will see a welcome complimentary glass of wine, and there may be a dinner organised on Saturday Evening.
We need a minimum of 35 cars to make the race viable so please sign and return the attached expression of interest before Monday 8 th January 2007 . Although the date clashes with the HSCC Donington Park, if the near 50 cars that appeared at the last
Silverstone Classic can split; 32 for Donington and the remaining 18 to join the European competitiors in Italy, we will have no problem filling both grids. Entry forms will go out
Mid January.
It’s the usual busy calendar, but with plenty of variety and choice for all tastes. We are still working out how the Lurani Trophy will operate between FJHRA and FIA, but there should be a meeting in January to sort this out
The UK Championship has a little more spice to it , with three European rounds at three of the most evocative meetings on the Historic Calendar , AND a return to Scotland for the second Historic Festival. The Silverstone Classic Festival will be by invitation as usual, and not part of any Championship, whilst Goodwood is for drum braked rear engined cars, and the preliminary lists were submitted for review LAST November. We will be strongly supporting the Historic City Challenge , as well as the Swedish Historic
Festival and the opening Historic meeting at the new long Anglesey circuit , perched so picturesquely above the cliffs and the Irish Sea.The front engined series has a strong
VSCC flavour, and we urge all the early cars to cement our position for the future

VOTE for FORMULA JUNIOR
This is the Fourth Year of the Historic Motor Racing Show [ now called “Race Retro”] and once again the Historic Motorsport Awards will be presented at the Annual Dinner. Formula Junior were the first winners of the Award for
CHAMPIONSHIP OR SERIES OF THE YEAR
And once again they are in the running …but “Masters” are getting a strong vote , because they run so many series in one meeting….so if YOU think that Formula Junior/ Lurani should be the winners again for 2006/07, then you should send your suggestion, with very brief reasons ( up to
50 words and specifying which category)) to historicawards@mac.com

Medicals for race licences
Sarah,
At the request of many drivers and with the support of the Autosport show in January and the
International Historic Motorsport show in March,Dr Mark Green [ DrMAGreen@aol.com
] is able to offer a medical service for the purposes of the MSA race licence requirements. He will also be able to offer Stress ECG testing and will therefore be setting up all the equipment at the shows to enablehis team to do this.
The licence requirements and cost of these services are summarised below
If you are applying for a National licence and are aged between 18 and 45 then you only need a medical on the first application. After that it is an annual self declaration. Once you reach 45 then you need an annual medical.
If you are applying for an International licence and aged between 18 and 45 you will need an annual medical. If you are over 45 and applying for an international licence then you will need a medical every year and a stress ECG in every 3rd year (valid 2 years)
A Stress ECG costs £175 and also includes the required cardiologists report and basic medical .
The basic medical alone would be £60.00.
Mark can do your medical at the Autosport Show in January or the International Historic Show in
March. The basic medical will take about 20 minutes and a basic medical and Stress ECG will take 45 minutes maximum. You will need to book an appointment. He will send you details about what you need to bring with you etc. nearer the time.
If you wish to proceed then please call Mark’s office and speak to Lynne 01883 337438 so that she can arrange the appointment.

Historic City Challenge
The organizers of the Copenhagen Grand Prix had suggested a unified approach to Historic motor racing between the three major street circuits, so
Duncan hosted a meeting in Wimbledon on 14 th
December between
Copenhagen GP – Olle Markusson and Claus Frausing 4/5 August
Oporto GP Francisco Santos 13/14/15 July
Pau GP Eric Heleine and Patrick Quiniou 27/28 May

DCPR FJHRA
The purpose of the meeting was to establish the HISTORIC CITY CHALLENGE for street circuits.
For 2007 there will be two series that count for a Challenge Trophy.
Formula Junior with 500cc F3 [ 3 or 5 FJ classes and one 500 class]
And up to 2 litre Saloons pre 1966
[Possibly also up to 2 litre Sports Cars pre 1969….or maybe not till 2008]
The Trophies [ overall and in classes ] will be awarded on Sunday Evening after the 3 rd round in
Copenhagen
Pau. 2 separate races for FJ and two races for 500s
Porto 2 races for FJ. The Porto organiser has indicated a particular wish to have a full class of

Copenhagen Historic Grand Prix
History
The Copenhagen Historic Grand Prix (CHGP) has been organized since
1996 at a growing scale year after year requiring increasing economical foundation. For 2006 they gathered a record crowd of nearly 12.000 paying spectators but events like CHGP must continue to grow in size and especially in quality to survive in the long run. While the City
Council supports the event so far it does not do so with actual funding not with money so far. To cope with future development the City circuits need to do something spectacular, which can create interest with potential heavy sponsors or partners of true international capacity, .e.g
Bosch, TAG Heuer, Castrol, Hella and Bridgestone etc. International automotive brands (not car makes) available everywhere and demanding impressive visibility in their competitive marketing efforts.
The view ahead
There is a strong opinion that historic racing at distant F1 race tracks is not the future. A historic scene has to be more intimate. Historic racers need to be brought to where the people are, in the cities, and the races made into a family event in a friendly atmosphere in creating much bigger audiences than just the dedicated enthusiasts
.
Copenhagen, Pau, Porto and perhaps other cities build temporary race tracks for that reason and constantly need exciting historic cars and drivers to develop the event in order to attract larger audiences, greater interest from the media and most of all more sponsors or partners. At the same time the cities can provide excellent tourist experiences for drivers, their family and crew. Like a long weekend in Copenhagen, for example, with visits to Tivoli Gardens, The Royal Palace, The Opera, shopping at
Strøget, a romantic tour of the harbour canal or just teaming up at cosy the grill party in the Faelled Park, next to the track.
What is proposed is a series of high quality city races to be held each year beginning in 2007 as a joint effort with the organizers in Pau and
Porto and in close cooperation with FJHRA, HGPCA and HSCC. The scene shall set the scene for fabulous cars in impressive but safe action in romantic surroundings like in the old days and with excellent hospitality for drivers and guests.
Regulations
FIA Appendix K will apply to the Historic City Race Challenge, at least for
Formula Junior (in all 5 classes) and the
GT 2-seater racing cars up to 1966
In Copenhagen the entry fee per car will only be €300 per car including hospitality for two persons.
As for the races there will be a free practice of 15 minutes followed by a timed practice. Each class will race two heats, one Saturday and one
Sunday, where both count for the championship.
Heat lengths may be 15 laps with a minimum of 30 km (approx. 20 miles)
The winner of each class at each venue is the driver with most points from the two heats (20, 18,17,16,15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4,
3, 2, and 1). The driver with most points from all six heats, i.e. two heats at each venue, Copenhagen, Pau and Porto, is the champion.
There will be prizes at each venue, but in addition there will be an overall prize giving, on the Sunday in Copenhagen for the Historic City Race
Challenge Champions which must be some very interesting prizes.
Certainly there will be cash prizes, perhaps 1 st prize € 3.000, 2 nd prize €
1.500 and 3 rd
€ 500.
Certainly these are three fantastic venues , and Formula Junior looks forward to a major presence at all three tracks in 2007

Knockhill launches 2007 Classic SpeedFair
The second running of the Classic SpeedFair at Knockhill will be over the weekend of 21/22 July 2007.We are very pleased to be invited to hold a two race round of the FJHRA/HSCC Historic Formula Junior Championship, as no mean reward for the increasing Scottish FJ contingent
The event will be a major celebration of historic motorsport and Scottish sporting heritage at the Knockhill circuit near Dunfermline, and will build on the success of the inaugural event.
The event will be extended for 2007, with a full day of racing on each day of the weekend., including the BRDC
1950s/60s sports Car series
Among the races will be the Jackie Stewart Trophy for FF1600, which is likely to run to a heats and final basis to accommodate the entry. Other classic races, on two and four-wheels, will be announced in the New Year.
In addition to race action, a diverse range of on-and off-track activities will entertain the whole family. A major celebration of Scottish rallying heritage will be the key focus of Saturday's programme, while the major theme for Sunday will be 100 years of the TT. The event will also mark the 50th anniversary of the first 100mph lap of the Isle of Man TT course by Scot Bob McIntyre.
The whole of the extensive Knockhill venue will be used to host a glorious array of displays, demonstrations and activities to really involve visitors, no matter what their particular interest.
Marque clubs, military vehicles, commercial vehicles and airborne displays will all feature in an event designed to cater for 'grandfathers to grandsons'!
"The feedback we received from the first Classic SpeedFair is that it was the best event we have ever hosted," says Knockhill's Stuart Gray. "It was a cracking start to the annual event and plans for 2007 are coming together extremely well."
For more information, please contact Sasha Brunton or Stuart Gray at Knockhill Circuit; 01383 723337.
500 F3 – 60 th Anniversary Year
Festivities start on Sunday 28 th January, with the 500 OA putting on a film show at Yelvertoft village hall,
Northants , with plenty of contemporary 1950s film materiel, but more is still welcome – in any format – so do contact Charlie Smith or Nigel Ashman on pat@banyardsmith.freeserve.co.uk
or nigel.ashman@shoelogic.com
. A full social day with much interesting material and plenty to eat is assured
Eric Heleine has announced that the dedicated 500 event at the Pau Grand Prix Historique will feature two heats, as well as a full practice period…What an an amazing sight it will be to see the exciting 500s battling around the
City streets for the first time since 1951, although the Monomills did race in 1958 . It must have beensome race in 1951, as the brothers Harry and Phillippe Schell battled over 25 laps with “Monty” Charrington, all in
Coopers, finishing only 3 seconds apart, while 4 th place man, d’Ormoy was five laps behind in one of the Blazy specials, the four DB-Panhards all falling by the wayside .Phillippe won at an average speed of 53.61 mph
In addition Grahame White has confirmed that the 500cc F3 60th Anniversary race, to be sponsored by JBS driver [ and FJ Caravelle constructor ] Richard Utley is definitely on at the 2007 Brands Hatch
Superprix on 30June/1 July on the Grand prix track

Subject: Spa information - refurb (and ruination?)
Don't know if you have seen what is happening - looks pretty horrible – the” Bus Stop” destroyed and the downhill run to Eau rouge about 60 meters longer (and faster!), and the run into La Source longer, straighter and a tighter hairpin too. Looks less flowing and more
'technical' - straights and hairpins! . . . . tougher on brakes I suspect.
All this in the cause of F1 convenience . . .. .
I hope you don't have any early dates for Spa!
From: Paul T Davis [davispt2000@hotmail.com]
Jeremy Hall has increased his influence on Historic motorsport Jeremy Hall is now a member of the HTWG [ FIA Historic technical Working Group] representing ACCUS.[ the USA issuing authority for HTPs] . In addition
Jeremy sits on the FIA CHI [ Commission Historique International], prepares the advice and report for the members of the FIA Heritage
Certificate Committee, and carries out many of the technical inspections of the cars ; Jeremy sits on the MSA Historic Committee, and is one of the few remaining technical inspectors for HTPs appointed by the MSA.
Jeremy of course is the FIA appointee who , largely, put together the last complete revision of Appendix K, and who assembled and keeps the FIA database of historic cars with “ FIA papers”. Only the FIA
HMSC[ Historic Motorsport Commission] does not , directly, have the benefit of Jeremy’s expertise ….but we understand that Jeremy was
NOT in favour of the HMSC’s proposal that the period of grace for
HVIFs be extended for a further year before HTPs become compulsory ….as we know, this proposal was reversed, and HTPs are now a requirement for International Historic racing from 1 1 07. !

Another ROAD GOING FORMULA JUNIOR… and another..
Vernon Williamson was sorry to have missed the FJ lunch, but instead was serving FJ well out scouting in
Madeira
Well Saturday in Funchal was a whole new experience. The local car club[ see.. http://www.cacmadeira.com/ ] ran a hill climb "Madeira Classic Cup" for road going cars. They lined up at the harbour - no support vehicles, mechanics, scrutineering etc. The council put out some tape, a few concrete safety kerbs and numerous marshalls and police all with whistles. As a car approached the whistles went and the crowds were cleared from the road. Half way up the hill there was a junction with a single cone in the middle so you could do a 360 clockwise turn round it before going on up to the football stadium.
Chatting up a marshall Vern found a FJ entered! The paddock which is down a very steep hill called. There was a 1959 Stanguellini with number plates, lights etc: the owner was Tito Noronha. , and research in Italy indicates that this may be one of the FJ cars that were on exhibit in the Monza Museum in the 80s
Just to add sum thing different to the FJ archive and the FJ web site Vern took both pics and a movie of one corner - oh he also got the results in local paper[understandeable if you can read the lingo.] There were no programs as there were only about 30 cars. The second fastest was an Austin Cambridge A60!!
As if that was not enough, while Duncan was in Maranello to plan the Mugello 2007 Lurani FJ race, he popped into Galeria Ferrari, where they are currently holding a special tribute to Piero Taruffi…as well as films of W 196 Mercedes-Benz [ yes, really ], there are various Ferrari F1 cars that he drove BUT also a D46
Cisitalia , as monoposto as you ever saw one , but with cycle wings for road use !!!!!..and in superb totally period and unrestored
STARTING OUR PLANS FOR FORMULA JUNIOR – 60 th ANNIVERSARY 2008
Letter From David Fenton [crosslecar32@yahoo.com]
Duncan,
I was wondering if you think there is any interest in a FJHRA trip to New Zealand. Last year an English contingent of Formula 5000 owners travelled over to do battle with Kiwis and Aussie owners after they had done battle with them in England the previous year. Likewise, a number of my Yank friends come over each year and although no one has yet to bring over a Jr many of then own one or two and might be enticed to do so if there was an event for Jrs.
If you think there would be interest on the Brit side I would be more than happy to investigate what interest there is in N Z. Although there are not many, there are a few JRs in New Zealand. Since I know most of the officials in the various clubs it would be an easy task for me. Doubt if there would be a whole lot of financial support, but then again one never knows.
Get back to me if there is any interest and please forgive me for not having read theFox letter more carefull:. realized i had previously only gotten to the part which mention the formula one race and wanted to dash off a note back to you. Just like us Yanks, probably why we rushed off to Iraq. Didn't want to take the time to bother reading about middle east history in case we might miss out on the adventure.
Cheers,
David
David, I will float the idea for the 2008 Centenary of FJ !!

Stratfield acquires motor racing magazine, Motor Sport
LONDON – Private magazine publisher, Stratfield, has acquired Motor Sport , the original motor racing magazine established in 1924, from Haymarket Publishing Group Limited.
“We have been publishing Motor Sport under licence for over six months and are delighted to have the opportunity to purchase the title outright,” said Paul Dobson, Managing Director of
Stratfield and former owner of Romsey Publishing Group, which he sold to Archant Specialist last year.
“ Motor Sport is a legendary magazine and a fantastic brand,” said Dobson. “Its famous green cover is familiar to literally millions of motor racing enthusiasts and we are looking forward to developing its reach even further, not only in the UK but worldwide.”
Motor Sport will continue to work closely with LAT , Haymarket’s photographic archive, to provide images from the history of the sport to its readers.
"By providing access to LAT's unique archive dating back to the dawn of motoring, we look forward to continuing to help Stratfield create the high quality magazine that Motor Sport's discerning readers have come to expect. We wish them every success in the future," said
Eric Verdon-Roe, Managing Director, Haymarket Publishing Group Limited.
