RESEARCH PROJECT: COMPARING and CONTRASTING: TWO OBJECTS – TWO HISTORIC STYLES
DUE March 5, MARKS 20 (5 - content, 5 - presentation), Value 20%
OBJECTIVES: To be able to recognize differences and similarities between historic styles; To
build the knowledge and understanding of socio-cultural aspects that caused and catalyzed
emerged design, production and consumerism.
FORMAT:
Choose two objects of design that represent historic styles or periods and can be compared in
terms of their goals, presentations, achievements and innovations.
1. Power Point Presentation (25-30 min.)
2. Essay five pages, not including illustrations
Content:
a) Choose two objects of design that represent two historic styles (e.g. fashion,
architecture, home décor, industrial design or electronics).
b) Describe each of the objects (time and place of production, name of designer, the
style they represent). Do they communicate a message? What are media and
materials used?
c) Analyze the commonalities and differences between chosen objects in the light of
visual, functional, and moral virtues
d) What was happening historically, politically, intellectually and economically at the
time they were made?
e) What were qualities of life at the time and place these objects were made that
might affected their functions and style?
f) Conclude with a paragraph which sums up your main idea.
