Dr. Hupert stated that Phi Beta Kappa is not a University organization and the academic records of nominees are reviewed by the membership committee for satisfaction of requirements, which does not include graduate courses, on a course by course basis. Given that only a percentage of the total number of credit hours earned are required not to be of an applied or professional nature, students in these programs should be able to satisfy the requirements. 25. Mathematics and Statistics – New Course -- MATH241 – Geometry for Middle School Teachers The Curriculum Committee has referred the draft proposal back to the Department of Mathematics for clarification and revision. No action taken by the Academic Council. 26. The Ceremony honors Winter graduates who receive College awards. 2. Nominations for the 2006 Book Awards competition, which recognizes scholarly works in the Sciences category published in 2003, 2004 and 2005, are being accepted by the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities. All submissions must be postmarked before March 1, 2006. 3. The enrollment projections for Fall 2006 are up. Applications have increased by 36% over this time period last year and deposits are up by 47%. The College is projecting an incoming class of 2000 and 500 transfer students which will help meet budgetary goals. 4. Father Garanzini is moving toward decommissioning Damen Hall and space is being identified elsewhere on the Lake Shore Campus for the current occupants of the building. Faculty input with respect to design for the Life Sciences Building worked well and the Dean foresees that process being repeated for the new structure. Electronic classrooms will be duplicated in the interim and Coffey Hall will be taken off line as a residence, at least in the interim. 5. Planning is going forward on a new Information Commons on the Lake Shore Campus. The Dean suggested that the Dean of Libraries be invited before the Council for a report. 6. Susan Hirsch will be stepping down as chair of the History Department effective Spring 2006. Barbara Rosenwein will succeed her. 7. The recommendation from the Academic Council concerning the discontinuation of the capstone course for the Latin American Studies Program has not been acted on it as of yet. The Dean has asked Elizabeth Lazono, the LASP program director, (and she has agreed) to have a conversation with her advisory board and students about a viable capstone experience in the absence of a capstone course. The Dean plans to conduct a Academic Council Minutes Page 9 12/14/05 focus meeting with the council of chairs and program directors on the issue and will report back to the Council in January. The consensus of the Academic Council members present was that more information is needed on what departments are currently doing about this issue before a decision is made about what, if any, action is to be taken by the Council. 8. Students from Loyola University New Orleans or Tulane University that want to remain at Loyola University Chicago must formerly apply. All the tuition paid for the Fall 2005 term went to the home institutions of those students displaced by Hurricane Katrina. All grades were transferred as recorded as opposed to pass/fail. 2733 Chair’s Report – Dr. Greg Dobrov The Chair gave the floor to Chris Manning who requested the Council’s comment on the Faculty Affairs UPC’s Faculty Appeal and Grievance Procedure recommendation on assistance in regard to the faculty member. The issue pertained to whether or not a grievant can have legal counsel present in conversations with upper administration. The recommendation currently states that anyone functioning as legal counsel cannot be present at these proceedings. In addition, Dr. Manning asked the Council to consider a suggestion he received with respect to the drafting of a document that states the grievant has the option to have an attorney present and includes an ironclad agreement stipulating that conversation with upper administration and the faculty member can not be used as evidence in any subsequent trial. A brief discussion ensued in which it was stated that a grievant should not be told that he or she cannot have access to legal counsel and the idea of a having an ombudsman present serving as an arbitrator as opposed to an attorney was suggested. The meeting was adjourned at 7:48p.m.
