Description
College History
Thomas Berkshire’s unpublished manuscript: A History of
Muskingum College (1937)
This document is valuable because Berkshire, a long time
professor at Muskingum College, used newspapers no longer extant
and oral interviews to research his work. In later years, Mr.
Berkshire was mentally incapacitated. Some of his material cannot
be verified. Berkshire’s work remains a valuable tool in
understanding College History. It was commissioned by the college
for its Centennial in 1937 but never published. Berkshire is the
author of the college alma mater.

Montgomery Presidential Papers
This collection of Montgomery Papers (John Knox and Robert N.) constitute a
full and vivid record of the college’s history from 1900-1965. They are
particularly important for detailing the survival of the college during the dark
days of the Great Depression and for revealing Montgomery’s commitment to the
ide of social gospel in the New World Movement. J. Knox Montgomery
represented a southern wing of the U.P. church and moved to New Concord from
North Carolina (He planted the College’s pine groves to remind him of home.)
The Montgomery Papers were rescued from a coal cellar in 1965.
A calendar of Correspondents (R.N.) is available.

Hailie Selassie Collection
Muskingum College’s Long standing connection to the Middle East was
underscored by the college being chosen to educate several nephews of Emperor
Hailie Selassie in the 1930’s. Professor Ernest Work, an advisor to Selassie, and
Chair of the History Department published the only history of Ethiopia available
in English at the time of Mussolini’s invasion. A Muskingum graduate, a Medical
missionary, was the first to casualty of that war.
