OCTOBER 9, 2013
Dear Families of Academy of Our Lady,
GREAT NEWS! Academy of Our Lady, received the National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Award
from the Dept. of Education. We were the only school in Bergen County to receive the award, one of four in the
Archdiocese, and one of the fifty non public schools recognized. Please see the entire letter separately. Thank you
to our committee who prepared the application: Ms. Betti Cuomo, Mrs. Virginia Gagnon, Mrs. Joyce Mason,
Mrs. Peggy Rogan, and Ms. Barbara Romeo. On the same day we announced our good news, Dr. Dames,
Superintendent of the Archdiocese of Newark, visited on a “Wednesday Walk-through”. Our students helped
make a wonderful book writing and drawing, “What I like best about Academy of Our Lady” to welcome her. She
enjoyed the children, their responses and commented on the warm hospitality.
Friday, Oct. 4th was a wonderful liturgical celebration at school with 8R preparing our First Friday Mass
celebrated by Fr.Robert. His message on keeping life simple and care for the poor like St. Francis was great. After
school our faculty traveled to Newark for the Catholic Schools Mass at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Newark
for all Catholic schools in the Archdiocese. The High Mass on the Feast of St. Francis was celebrated by
Archbishop Myers. Congratulations to our Honorees for their years of service Mrs. Diane Lautermilch and Ms.
Barbara Romeo, who received a special blessing and award at our school Mass.
Parent Teacher conferences will be Thursday, Oct 17, in the afternoon and evening and Friday, Oct. 18 in
the afternoon. All parents of students from K through 8 are expected to attend. This cooperation and support
network of home and school working together is an essential ingredient for a successful year for our students.
Appointment signup sheets will go home for you to indicate your preference. These two days will be early
dismissal days to accommodate conferences. PreK sessions for three and four year olds will be held, as they do
not participate in conferences at this time.
On Monday students were encouraged to recite the Rosary in honor the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.
Our school’s pilgrim statue was presented to the students with the invitation to take the statue home for a week
and invite the family to join in the recitation of the Rosary. Students in grades 1 and 2 will be given Rosary beads,
which were made by the local chapter of Rosary makers at Our Lady of Mr. Carmel. Students in grades 3 – 8 will
receive Rosary rings to keep in their pocket and use to recite a decade of the Rosary after lunch. October is the
month of Our Lady of the Rosary. Mrs. Kranenburg is coordinating the schedule to have the statue of Our Lady of
Fatima visit school families. Please contact her or myself if you are interested in sharing in this devotional
ministry.
