Hicks Elementary About 30 years ago, Howard Hicks moved to Alief from Beaumont to handle public relations for Alief Chamber of Commerce. Since then, the World War II veteran's name has become synonymous with Alief. His role as a longtime aide to State Representative Talmadge Heflin has helped him support numerous community causes. In addition to being actively involved in the former Alief Chamber of Commerce, he has played key roles as chairman of the Alief 130th Anniversary Committee and president of the Alief Cemetery Historical Association. He spearheaded the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Alief Post Office, helped organize the Alief Community Association , and participated on the Education Commission of the Houston Chamber of Commerce. In 1996, he helped organize the Alief historical Society and is its Charter President. As a long time member of the Alief Noon Lions Club, Hicks is active in a number of charitable causes for the community. The students of Alief ISD have benefited for years from the organization's eyeglass assistance program which provides free exams and glasses to children who cannot afford them. Hicks' work in this area has earned him the highest honor bestowed by the international Lions Club---the Melvin Jones Fellow. Howard Hicks has been described as a believer in youth, a champion for education, and a man whose integrity is without question. It seems only fitting that Alief ISD's elementary school would be named after a man who has been and remains such an important part of the Alief community.
