Each student will need all three pieces. You will also want to buy a Flash drive to store your work on. These are cheap and can be purchased at the bookstore or Target for a few dollars for a 1GB drive. Course Objectives: This class covers fundamental computer concepts and terminology; major applications of computers, database concepts, telecommunications and networking technologies, history of computers, and current hardware and software. Basic use of Microsoft Office 2007 software for word processing (Microsoft Word), database (Access), presentations graphics (PowerPoint), Spreadsheet construction (Excel) Grading: There will be homework, lab work (ie Microsoft Office), midterm, final exam, plus skills assessments. Attendance/ participation will count! Notice that items are weighted so for example, since there will be 12 homeworks, each will count for only 1.67% of your score since the average will be worth 20%. But the midterm itself is worth 25% of your score. For the first class that you miss, you will lose 2 percentage points of your attendance score then 4 more for the next class, then 6, etc. The grading will be 98% if you miss one class, 94% if you miss 2 classes, 88% if you miss 3 classes and so on. So it gets worse, the more you miss. It’s a sliding scale. Miss 1 class Attend. Hands On Lab Assignments Labs will be completed for the course following instructions in the lab text - Microsoft Office 2007 Brief Edition. The labs will use data files which are available in the Computer Commons or can be downloaded from the textbook website. Late Work Policy: Late assignments may have penalty grade deduction of 10% for each class day late. Extra Credit Policy: There are no extra credit activities. Instructor Expectations: Syllabus may change as needed. Be aware that we use surveillance software on the classroom computers and you are expected to stay on task. If you arrive late to class, you will have to tell a joke, sing a song, or tell a short story. Classroom Etiquette: Cell phones and pagers must be turned off and put away off the desks during class instruction. Please do not bring laptops as they are a distraction to students around you. Please arrive on time and listen respectfully while the instructor or other class members are speaking. Taping of lectures is not allowed 3 unless you receive special permission from the instructor. Food and drink (other than water) are not permitted in the classroom. For Your Protection: It is your responsibility to SAVE your assignments on your on a Flash drive, diskette or other removable media. Keep these copies in a safe place until you have received your final grade. The Learning Support Center Please feel free to utilize the learning support center and its tutors, who can assist you with learning the content or working with the applications for the course. The tutors cannot do you assignments but they can help you either in the lab or with the reading. You need to schedule an appointment to work with tutor in the center. Withdrawal Policy: It is the student’s responsibility to withdraw. If you want to withdraw from the class within the first seven weeks, you can do so without an instructor’s signature. Just go to Admissions and Records (KSC Building) and fill out a withdrawal form. After seven weeks you need an instructor’s signature. Within the last two weeks of class you cannot withdraw from my class! Don’t just stop going to class, because you will continue to get zeroes on tests and homework and at the end of the semester you will get whatever grade you earned. Remember, an “F” on your transcript is forever. Even if you take the class again, the old “F” still shows up, and it’s usually on the first page. Your GPA will be adjusted but all grades from all classes appear on a transcript. An employer will see every Withdrawal, “F”, Incomplete or whatever you’ve done. Attendance: Only persons who are registered for a class at any of the Maricopa Community Colleges may attend that class. Attendance requirements are determined by the course instructor. Students who do not meet the attendance requirement, as determined by the course instructor, may be withdrawn. Students who fail to attend the first scheduled class meeting, or to contact the instructor regarding absence before the first scheduled class meeting may at the option of the instructor be withdrawn. At the beginning of each course, each faculty member will provide students with written attendance requirements. It is the student’s responsibility to consult with the instructor regarding official or unofficial absences. Absences begin to accumulate with the first scheduled class meeting. 4 Students bear the responsibility of notifying the Office of Admissions and Records when they discontinue studies in a course or at the college. Official Absences -- MCCCD policy states that: Official absences are those that occur when students are involved in an official activity of the college, i.e., field trips, tournaments, athletic events, and present an official absence excuse form. Absences for such events shall not count against the number of absences allowed by an instructor or department. Students who must miss a class for an official reason must obtain an official absence verification card from the appropriate dean or associate dean and present it to the appropriate instructor(s) before the absence. Prior arrangements must be made with each instructor for make-up work. If prior arrangements have been made, the students will not be penalized. At least one week before the holiday, students shall submit to their instructor(s) a written statement that includes both the date of the holiday and the reason why class attendance is impossible.
