the education of students and residents at all levels of the curriculum. To that end, we
value the relationship with our affiliate institutions and wish to create a stronger
academic relationship with our colleagues in surgery. The University Chairman
welcomes the opportunity to work together and further our mutual academic goals.
Comments and suggestions for joint academic endeavors which lead to professional
and academic advancement are encouraged.
1. The faculty candidate/appointee shall attend a minimum of 12 CME-accredited
Surgery Grand Rounds per year at the Montefiore or Einstein campus sites of the
Unified Department of Surgery, or at an Einstein-affiliated institution (i.e. Beth Israel
Medical Center, Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center, Jacobi Medical Center, Long
Island Jewish Medical Center, North Shore University Hospital)
2. The faculty candidate/appointee shall deliver a minimum of 1 CME-accredited Grand
Rounds lecture per year at the Montefiore or Einstein campus sites of the Unified
Department of Surgery, or at an Einstein-affiliated institution (i.e. Beth Israel Medical
Center, Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center, Jacobi Medical Center, Long Island Jewish
Medical Center, North Shore University Hospital).
Note: The faculty candidate/appointee shall receive an average score < 2.0 on
CME evaluations (1=Excellent).
3. The faculty candidate/appointee shall participate in Department medical student
education and teaching affairs as requested by the University Chairman. Faculty
whose academic activity is predominantly research related, need not fulfill all of the
numeric teaching requirements.
4. Faculty in the junior ranks for reappointment and faculty in the senior ranks for
academic review by the University Chairman shall provide the University Chairman
with a report of the appointee’s scholarly/teaching activity (due March 1 of the
applicable reappointment year). This report shall include the following:
a. Documentation of CME-accredited Grand Rounds activities by year as
outlined above.
b. Documentation of personal teaching activities involving AECOM students.
For lectures and rounds, include the number of hours and the number of
AECOM students for each teaching session by year.

c. Operating room observation by AECOM students, residents and fellows
shall be considered part of the teaching activities.
d. Documentation of personal teaching activities involving residents and
fellows. For lectures and rounds, include the number of hours and the
number of residents and fellows for each teaching session by year.
e. Documentation of basic, clinical and translational research activity.
f. Documentation of extramural funding activity, especially information
related to NIH funding.
g. Copies of all journal articles published since the last appointment.
h. Updated curriculum vitae.
5. The University Chairman will recommend candidates to a specific rank
(Instructor/Assistant/Associate/Professor) for appointment/reappointment in the
Department of Surgery, as put forth by affiliated Chief/Chairmen (as applicable).
Appointment criteria include the guidelines established by the Albert Einstein
College of Medicine Committee on Appointments and Promotion.
6. Official appointment notification by the Albert Einstein College of Medicine will permit
the faculty candidate/appointee to use the official title in accordance with institutional
policy, as noted on the Einstein website at:

Introduction
The Department of Pathology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine

Requirements for Academic Appointment
1.
The faculty candidate/appointee shall participate in Department medical school
education and teaching affairs as required by the University Chairman. These
medical school education and teaching events must include significant direct teaching
activities, must be measurable, and must be documented annually. Alternatively, the
faculty candidate/appointee shall provide a minimum of 150 hours per annum of
direct resident teaching. Faculty whose academic activity is predominantly research
related, need not fulfill all of the numeric teaching requirements.
2. The faculty candidate/appointee shall attend a minimum of six (6) CME-accredited
Grand Rounds at Einstein/Montefiore or Affiliate campus sites (i.e., Jacobi, Beth
Israel Medical Center, Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center, North Shore-LIJ).
Alternatively, the candidate can complete and successfully pass an exam on a
Departmentally-recommended CME program worth at least 12 credits.
3. The faculty candidate/appointee shall deliver a minimum of one (1) CME-accredited
Grand Rounds Lecture in a three (3)-year period at Einstein/Montefiore or Affiliate
campus sites.
4. Faculty in the junior ranks for reappointment and faculty in the senior ranks for
academic review by the University Chairman shall provide the University Chairman
with a report of the appointee’s scholarly/teaching activity (due March 1 of the
applicable review interval). This report shall include the following:
a. Documentation of CME-accredited Grand Rounds activities as outlined
above.
b. Documentation of personal teaching activities involving Einstein students.
For lectures and rounds, include the number of hours and the number of
Einstein students for each teaching session by year.
c. Pathology Service observation by Einstein students, residents, and fellows
shall be considered part of the teaching activities.
d. Documentation of personal teaching activities involving residents and
fellows. For lectures and rounds, the number of hours and the number of
residents and fellows for each teaching session by year must be included.
e. Documentation of basic, clinical, and translational research activity citing
percentage of time spent on research, number of peer-reviewed papers and
grants over the past five (5) years.
f. Documentation of junior faculty mentoring.
g. Documentation of teaching –lectures, precepting, supervising.
h. Documentation of extramural funding activity, particularly information
related to NIH funding.
i.
Copies of all journal articles published since the last review cycle.
j.

Requirements

student and/or resident (fellow) education, teaching and training activities as
requested by the University Chairman (and/or affiliate Chairs) with a minimum of

complete an online Einstein-Montefiore Department of Medicine Grand Rounds
and successfully pass the required CME examination for at least 12 credits.
9. Faculty in the junior ranks for reappointment and faculty in the senior ranks for
academic review by the University Chairman shall provide the University
Chairman with a report of the appointee’s scholarly/teaching activity (due March
1 of the applicable review interval]). This report shall include information, as
relevant, in the following areas:

outlined above.
b. Documentation of personal educational, teaching and training activities
involving Einstein students and/or medical residents (includes
subspecialty fellows) which includes lectures, teaching rounds,
precepting and supervision. For lectures and rounds, include the

residents (fellows) for each teaching session by year.
c. Documentation of basic, clinical and translational research activity
citing extramural funding activity, especially information related to NIH
funding, percentage of time spent on research, number and citations
of peer-reviewed papers and grants over past 5 years.
d. Documentation of junior faculty mentoring.
