Research Proposal 20-07 May 2010 Submitted by : Subcommittee on Bridges and Structures Title Additional Funding for Project 20-07/Task 245, FY 2010 Update AASHTO Design and Construction Specifications and Guidelines Related to the Temporary Works Used in Bridge Construction Background In 1991, a study was initiated by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to identify the current state of practice in the United States and abroad for designing, constructing, and inspecting the temporary works used to construct highway bridge structures. This study was known as the FHWA Bridge Temporary Works Research Program. Two of the documents produced from this study were FHWA Publication No. FHWA-RD-93-032, Guide Design Specification for Bridge Temporary Works and FHWA Publication No. FHWA-RD-93-034, Construction Handbook for Bridge Temporary Works. Both of these documents were adopted by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) in 1995. There have been several initiatives since publication of the AASHTO Guide Design Specifications for Bridge Temporary Works and the AASHTO Construction Handbook for Bridge Temporary Works that have advanced the design and construction of the temporary works used in bridge construction. Most notably, AASHTO produced provisions for temporary works in the 1991 Interim Specifications and subsequently incorporated these provisions in the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Construction Specifications. Based upon the period of time that has lapsed since the development of the original Guide Design Specification and Construction Handbook, and the development of other related standards within this period of time, the reassessment and updating of these publications is necessary. Objective The objective of this project is to update the AASHTO Guide Design Specifications for Bridge Temporary Works, the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Construction Specifications, and the Bridge Construction Handbook for Bridge Temporary Works. Tasks Task 1. Prepare outlines for revisions to the AASHTO Guide Design Specifications for Bridge Temporary Works, the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Construction Specifications, and the AASHTO Construction Handbook for Bridge Temporary Works. Submit to Task Group for review and comment. Task 2. Meet with Task Group to review comments. Revise outlines accordingly. Redistribute outline to the Task Group. Task 3. Revise documents in accordance with outlines. Submit to Task Group for review, comment, and approval. Task 4. Perform final revisions to documents. Prepare final report that documents research effort and includes updated Guide Design Specifications for Bridge Temporary Works, AASHTO LRFD Bridge Construction Specifications, and Construction Handbook for Bridge Temporary Works.
