Each session offers two or three semester hours through Central Michigan University. Credit is accepted by most school districts for use toward professional certificate renewal and may also be used to comply with the School Administrator continuing education requirement. If you are working on a degree program, please consult with your advisor or certification office to determine if the course will apply to your program. The CMU Connections Series will bring science, history & art teachers together to build links that connect curriculum for students in the areas of glass, clay, fiber, metal, wood and stone. CMU EDU 508 Connections Workshops 2006-07 Fall Series September 22, 23, 24 & 29, 30, Oct 1-- Ancient Techniques & Technologies: Stone. Learn how to make ancient tools for working stone, knap flint arrowheads, and carve soapstone sculptures in the ancient tradition. (3 credits) October 20, 21, 22, 27, 28, 29--Art Across the Ages: Clay. Dig and process local clay, hand build and throw pots, then fire them in primitive and modern kilns. (3 credits) November 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 12--Art Across the Ages: Metal. Explore ancient, medieval, Renaissance and modern metal, including copper planishing, blacksmithing, welding and Precious Metal Clay. (3 credits) Winter Series December 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 10--Art Across the Ages: Glass. Hands-on glass experiences, including making and using the materials from ancient, medieval, Renaissance and modern times. Learn and try your hand at beading, fusing and stained glass, (3 credits) January 19, 20, 21, 26, 27, 28--Art Across the Ages: Fiber I. Experience ancient, medieval, Renaissance and modern fiber techniques, including felting, paper and rope making, basketry, spinning and weaving, (3 credits) February 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, 25--Art Across the Ages: Fiber 2. Explore various methods of applying patterns to fibers, such as Shibori, batik, indigo & French Serti. Methods range from ancient to modern techniques. Make your own stone chisels to shape wood, then carve, stain and embellish wooden carvings as in ancient times. (3 credits) April 20, 21, 22, 27, 28, 29--Ancient Techniques & Technologies: Glass. Build and fire an ancient beading furnace and glass making furnace, as well as exploring the ancient glass techniques of fusing, beading and stained glass. (3 credits) May 4, 5, 6, 11, 12, 13--Ancient Techniques & Technologies: Metal. Build a copper smelter in the ancient tradition, planish a copper bowl, forge iron and explore other metalworking techniques of ancient times. (3 credits) Summer Series June 18, 19, 20, 21, 22--Ancient Techniques & Technologies: Fiber. Experience a fiber intensive, exploring the ancient methods of making and decorating paper and fabrics. (3 credits) July 9, 10, 11, 12, 13-- Ancient Techniques & Technologies: Glass. Build and fire an ancient beading furnace and glass making furnace, as well as exploring the ancient glass techniques of fusing, beading and stained glass. (3 credits) July 16, 17, 18, 19, 20--Ancient Techniques & Technologies: Clay. Explore ancient pottery from digging clay and processing it, to hand building pots to building and firing primitive kilns. (3 credits) August 13, 14, 15, 16, 17-- Write, Print & Publish a la Eastern Spice: Letterpress Printing and Bookbinding Intensive. Participants will have hands-on experience in the entire process of publishing a book and leave the class with a limited edition book & as a published author. (2 or 3 Credits) August 20, 21, 22, 23, 24--Ancient Techniques & Technologies: Stone.
