BOC and TCP combine forces to develop world first in
lighting
BOC, the UK & Ireland’s largest supplier of industrial gases and related equipment,
has partnered with Taylor Construction Plant Ltd (TCP) to develop the world’s first
low energy LED, hydrogen fuel cell powered lighting tower. Powered by BOC’s
HYMERA fuel cell technology, the Ecolite-H2 tower provides - at point of delivery carbon-free, emission-free and noise-free lighting. The award-winning* Ecolite-H2
lighting tower incorporates BOC’s innovative GENIE lightweight hydrogen cylinder
and is fully autonomous, with a run time of between 50 and 750 hours depending
upon fuel cylinder configuration and features dusk to dawn auto switching.
With no internal combustion engine or harmful emissions, Ecolite-H2 can be used in
areas where emissions from diesel or petrol engines are an issue. This makes
Ecolite-H2 suitable for locations where traditional lighting towers cannot be used. It is
also ideal for environmentally sensitive areas where there must be zero risk of
contamination. The Ecolite-H2 tower is designed to take two GENIE hydrogen
cylinders, offering ease of handling and long runtimes, and operates as a battery
hybrid.
The Ecolite-H2 lighting tower is a world first
BOC’s HYMERA fuel cell produces energy by combining hydrogen with oxygen (from
the atmosphere) to produce electricity and water. There are no carbon or particulate
1
emissions as would be the case with a conventional diesel powered generator. In
addition, the process is virtually silent which is important for work at night, in built-up
areas and enclosed spaces.
Another major benefit of the Ecolite-H2 is that it is engineered using today’s highefficiency technologies including the low-energy LED lighting from Prismalence. As
we achieve ever-reducing lighting loads through the use of the innovative lighting
technology loads what would be unsuitable for even the smallest diesel generator to
support can be cost effectively run on the HYMERA.
Features of the Ecolite-H2 lighting tower include:
· Operational in enclosed ventilated places
· Low energy LED lighting
· Fully autonomous run time between 25 to 750 hours*
· Automated with dusk to dawn auto switching
· Reduced light pollution
· Controllable light patterns
· Fully integrated GENIE cylinder
· Reduced built environment impact.
The Ecolite-H2 is also compliant with the requirements under Section 61 relating to
pollution, including light and noise pollution, ground contamination.
Nathan Palmer, BOC Director of Bulk and Packaged Gases, commented: “BOC is
committed to hydrogen as a fuel and the launch of the Ecolite-H2 tower proves that
this is not just something for the future but is a deliverable today. Our partnership
with TCP is an exciting venture that will enable both companies to accelerate the use
of fuel cells and hydrogen within the construction, rail and many other industries.”
Andrew Barker, TCP’s Managing Director added “TCP is proud to be playing our part
in the development and use of hydrogen as a 'Clean Fuel' and is committed to seeing
an early adoption of this hydrogen economy across a wide range of industries –
particularly within the built environment".
The Ecolite-H2 Tower brings together ground-breaking technologies from both BOC
and TCP and is part of a range of temporary lighting equipment available to the rental
sector as well as directly to end-users.
*The Ecolite H2 won first place in the 2013 Skanksa Supply Chain Green Solution awards.
