DESCRIPTION OF COURSE
This course provides the student with an introductory knowledge of the main
archaeological issues in Anatolia from the Neolithic to the Byzantine period. Major
events such as the beginning of farming, urbanism, development of cultural groups
and cultural transformations, and the rise and fall of empires will be covered. It aims to
familiarize students with the development of architecture and other material remains of the
historical periods as uncovered in archaeological sites. The classes will consist of lectures and
discussions illustrated with slides. Discussions based on the weekly assigned readings from
the textbook.

Course Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course students will gain a familiarity with the archaeology, art and
architecture of the historical periods in Anatolia from the earliest settlements of the 10 th
millenium B.C. through the iron ages. Students will develop an ability to define technical
terms concerning Anatolian archaeology. They will be also able to identify cultural processes
that shape the development of societies in Anatolia.

3. Being accountable for the contributions to make in any team activities.
Note: Altough I will give occasional lectures, most of the class meetings will consist of
discussions based on the assigned readings. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU COME
PREPARED TO EACH CLASS – READ THE ASSIGNED CHAPTER IN YOUR
TEXT FOR THE DATE INDICATED ON THIS SYLLABUS.
Concering Honesty: Students are expected to neither to give nor to receive unauthorized aid
on examinations and homework papers, in accordance with the regulations of this university
Class Field Trip
We will take a field trip to at least two archaeological sites (in the vicinity of İzmir) that will
illustrate the techniques of site analysis and excavation. It will take place on a Saturday
(probably in October), leaving in the morning and returning in the afternoon. You are required
to attend.
