Word: Read Matthew 6:5-15 What did you find helpful on Sunday morning?
 In both Luke and Matthew we have recorded as; ‘the Lord’s Prayer’.
The friends of Jesus saw the link between his life of prayer and the authority and power by
which he taught and performed miracles. One of them asked him to teach them how to pray.
 Have you ever thought of prayer as something you needed to be taught to do
(Luke 11:1)? How have you grown in your understanding and practise of prayer?
The image of the tree helps us understand the purpose of prayer and how different aspects
of prayer develop different aspects of our relationship with God. Think about the different
aspects of prayer:
 PRIVILEGE - of being rooted in relationship with God as Father, ‘Our Father in
heaven’. Why is knowing God like this like the roots of a tree (Romans 8:15)?
 PRAISE - ‘Hallowed be your name’. Why is praise and thanksgiving so important in
our lives (1 Thess 5:16,17)? How easily do you give yourself to praise?
 PURPOSE - ‘Your Kingdom come, your will be done..’ Like the trunk of a tree, this
is the heart of what prayer is about. What does it mean for us to seek God’s
kingdom in prayer?
The next part are the branches that flow from our time of prayer:
 PROVISION - daily bread – Jesus teaches us to pray every day for our daily needs
– how can this help us to live in trust and a deeper relationship with God?
 PARDON – receiving and giving forgiveness- why do you think forgiving others is
linked to us receiving forgiveness?
 PROTECTION – kept from temptation and the evil one – how does prayer bring
protection in the spiritual battle in which we are engaged?
The ‘soil’ of praise holds the life giving water of the Holy Spirit (Psalm 1:3). The life of the
tree is dependant on drawing the water through the roots.
 How does this speak to us of the place of the Holy Spirit in prayer? Do you see
prayer mainly as asking for God to deliver answers to our requests or to work in us
by His Spirit?
