The children learn about different types of plants and seeds and go on a visit to a local garden. As the children make and grow things throughout this topic they can add them to the shop. * In Theme 1, session 1 the children investigate and make their own pop-up flower/plant cards. When finished these could be on sale in the ‘Flower Shop’. * Display real/plastic flowers in plastic vases. The tissue flowers made by the children in session 3 would be great! Oasis is useful for displaying imitation flowers. * Arrange a selection of real plants – explain to the children that these will need to be cared for! Or make pretend plants from recycled materials or sculpted sponge. Or plant real twigs in pots – they will need to be replaced every few days. Make labels for unestablished plants and flowers showing the customer what they will look like. * Display flower and plant posters. These can be advertisements or provide information. * Display a range of seed packets – These could be real, or old empty packets filled with rice or packets made and designed by the children. * Provide plastic fruits and vegetables, ‘locally grown’, for the chn to buy. * Use clip art or cut out pictures of flowers and plants and place them on a World Map showing where they come from. * Try to provide the children with a uniform or overall/apron, gardening gloves, tools e.g. trowels, watering cans so they look the part. A till, money and bags for purchases and bags/purses for customer. Dressing up is always fun, so some everyday clothes will finish off their characters! Remember to price all things for sale! The children will love using money! © Hamilton Trust 2006-2012 Top Tips Some ideas to encourage Speaking and Listening in your Role Play Area. Topic: Global Garden Role Play Area: Flower Shop or Small Nursery Discuss with the children the ‘people’ who may be involved in a ‘Flower Shop’ and what their roles entail. How many people you choose will depend on the size of your role play area. Display any posters, advertisements, special offers and leaflets. This will invite dialogue from the children. If you have trouble finding posters with appropriate pictures and information, make some of your own or ask the children! Exotic plants Order yours NOW How to care for your garden Beautiful bouquets for any occasion Top Tips from Alan Small Use their visit to a local garden by taking photos and displaying them on a ‘Local News’ board. Local News Children explore plants and flowers in local garden as part of their Global Garden Topic. Display photos from visit Pictures of the Week Encourage the children to draw or take photos of flowers and plants for displaying in a ‘Gallery’. They may even find out more on the internet! Excuse me … When is the best time to plant sunflower seeds? Remind the children about being polite! © Hamilton Trust 2006-2012 It should say on the back of the packets, sir.
