Unpacking the cupboard
The effects of trauma, grief and loss, anxiety and
depression on the physical and emotional self.
As we age we all have to learn to manage this,
be it the trauma of terminal diagnosis, the loss of
family or the grief of failing health. The success
or failure of our herbal prescriptions can depend
on our ability to recognise and manage these
issues in our patients.
Poster Presentations
A variety of academic and research posters on
topics of interest to the profession will be
displayed throughout the conference.

Workshops
1. Workshop: Amanda McQuade Crawford
Healthy Libido, & Sex as We Age
The idea of healthy sexuality for all adults into
old age has touched most sectors of civilisation
in 2015. Continental and regional differences
occur, from East to West, and from Northern to
Southern hemispheres. Yet in health clinics,
even natural medicine practices around the
world, attention to helping people hoping to
improve libido and satisfaction is patchy. This
may be due to doctor-patient embarrassment,
a perceived lack of time to resolve any questions
raised, or other obstacles to people achieving
healthy sexual function. Herbalists are perhaps
best suited to address this unmet need in health
care because our philosophy and Materia
Medica empower patients with gentle, ethical,
and profoundly healing qualities
2. Workshop: Samir Shawgy Ayoub PhD
The pharmacological dilemma of treating old
patients
For this presentation, Samir will initially give an
overview on drugs commonly prescribed to
elderly patients to treat chronic inflammatory and
cardiovascular conditions; with a particular focus
on their mechanisms of actions. For the second
half of the talk; faced with the somewhat recent
evidence on cardiovascular complications
induced by cyclooxygenase-2 selective inhibitors
and to a lesser extent, classical non-steroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs, the dilemma and
arguments on clinical use of these drugs will be
presented. Finally, new and emerging paradigms
on the resolution of inflammation from preclinical investigations that have challenged some
of the prescription practices of anti-inflammatory
drugs will also be presented.
3. Workshop: Christopher Hedley
Herbs for our elders
One of the nation’s favourite herbalists talks
about herbs
4. Workshop: Anna Newton
"Treating hypertension - key herbs and
strategies"
Disruption of healthy sleep patterns can occur
for many reasons including current stressful
situations, female hormonal imbalance,
adrenal dysfunction, nutritional deficiency,
depression, anxiety, glucose deregulation,
hepatic detox issues, thyroid malfunction,
chronic inflammation, pain, and so forth.
Botanical medicines offer safe, effective, nonhabit forming sleep aids to address the
specific needs of the individual sleep architect
and health. Lecture will discuss current
standard medical treatments, dietary aspects,
and lifestyle aspects in case history format.
5. Workshop: Dedj Leibbrandt
Wound healing and wound care.
In this workshop Dedj will look at leg ulcers
and chronic wounds / wound healing. The
content will be clinically relevant and based on
clinical experience. We will explore both
internal and external medicines and how to
recognise which ones will be more difficult /
easy to treat.
6. Workshop: Dr. Nicole Feris
Breaking the Cycle
Inflammation and Chronic disease
We are in the midst of an epidemic of chronic
degenerative disease. This includes virtually all
the ailments that will present to you in practice.
All chronic degenerative disease occurs in a
body that is chronically inflamed. In this
presentation we will refresh and deepen our
understanding of the inflammatory process and
the factors that trigger and sustain this
degenerative state. We will look at recent
research on this subject and explore the best
means of reducing background inflammatory
stress, and better enabling medicinal herbs to
do their healing work. Nicole will share some
case studies from General Practice and
practical tips on how to best incorporate
practical strategies to reduce inflammation and
support health and healing.
7. Workshop: Louise Joyce
Vitamin D and Omegas in the Ageing
population
Learn more about these essential nutrients in
both general populations and also the ageing
group. Louise will take us on a journey covering
in clinic testing, optimal food sources, optimal
dosages and how to navigate the supplement
saturation we have available to us
8. Workshop: Dr Dilis Clare
Age Related Joint Pain
This workshop will review Herbs and
Supplements used in a common clinical
presentation
