fundamental concept - Teaching & Learning

First year Visual art unit: FSA112 1A Core studies in Art and Design: an art/design work using a fundamental concept
Developed by Bill Hart, Neil Haddon, Lucy Bleach and Moira Cordiner
The criteria for this task were developed from the original learning outcomes. These outcomes now need to be revised to match the new criteria more closely. This
example illustrates that you can develop criteria sheets even if the original outcomes require revision because they are too specific and/or too numerous or
unassessable.
Synopsis of the task and its context
This is the final task in the unit and is weighted 45%. Students are required to make an art/design work that uses a fundamental concept (such as light, space, time).
They are prepared for the task through lectures, studio workshops, group work, one-on-one with tutors and through experimenting and exploring with materials and
techniques.
The task comprises four components:
 a visual journal that provides evidence of the student’s exploration of the qualities of the fundamental concept and the development of an idea
 a proposal that presents an idea for the art/design work with a rationale for choice of materials and processes (250 words)
 a work that expresses the idea
 a reflection on the work (about 150 words)

Task specific criteria
On completion of this unit, you should be able to:
 Utilise a journal as an aide to developing and exploring ideas and of documenting
strategies and development of practical projects. (Problem Solving)
 Employ a diversity of visual and conceptual problem solving strategies through
developing their projects. (Problem Solving)
To complete this task, you should :
 Explore the fundamental concept to develop an idea
 Discuss and analyse the formal and conceptual properties of Time, Light and Space in
an individual and group studio context. (Knowledge and Communication)
 Have gained a greater awareness of the strategies and concepts artists/designers use
in solving problems and developing art and design projects that work with the
properties of Time, Light and Space. (Knowledge)
 Demonstrate and apply knowledge of the fundamental concept
 Gain the confidence to present their work for critique and make use of feedback.
(Communication and Problem Solving)
 Express the idea through the work
