To undertake clinical work in the specialty of interventional cardiology as part of the University Hospital Southampton cardiac service, to enable academic activity to flourish in cardiology and related subjects Key accountabilities/primary responsibilities % Time Key accountabilities/primary responsibilities % Time 1. Academic 50% Primary Academic Responsibilities/Activities: To develop, coordinate and sustain a broad research programme and activity in cardiology or related fields. Act as principal investigator on projects, responsible for defining original research objectives, developing and managing research staff, and attracting funding through bids and reputation. The research activities will develop themes in the Human Development and Health Academic Unit, Faculty of Medicine and Southampton BRC. Publish research in international peer reviewed journals. 4.75 PAs Interact and collaborate with other Faculty and University research teams, contributing to funding bids, writing peer-reviewed papers, and managing and providing guidance to staff and students based on specialist expertise, as appropriate. Provide advice and, where required, leadership for non-clinical colleagues undertaking research and provide the links with other members of the Coronary Research Group and Faculty of Medicine Contribute to efficient management and administration of Academic Unit and Faculty, as required by Head of Academic Unit and Dean. Contribute to the development of teaching and learning activities of the Academic Unit at undergraduate and or postgraduate level. Deliver teaching of the highest quality through lectures, tutorials, and seminars. The post holder may be expected to develop new education programs if the opportunities arise. Provide expert advice and subject leadership to other staff and students, including research supervision. Represent the Academic Unit/Faculty/University in the disciplinary community externally. Any other duties as allocated by the line manager following consultation with the post holder. Office Space & appropriate secretarial support will be provided by the University. Shared secretarial support will be provided for the clinical services. 2. Clinical responsibilities Note - clinical academic staff are managerially accountable for their clinical duties to the Clinical Lead, for CV &T Care group. The NHS job plan for the clinical sessions will be discussed and implemented on appointment following discussions with the Clinical Lead and the Faculty line manager. 2 Key accountabilities/primary responsibilities % Time 3. Clinical Primary Responsibilities/Activities: 50% Provide a clinical service, consisting approximately 3.75 PA’s of direct clinical care and 1.5 5.25 PAs PA’s of supporting professional activities: 3.75 Clinic/Ward work/Catheter Lab 1.5 PA SPA The post involves forming an academic firm with Prof Curzen to contribute between them to one slot on a 1 in 6 on call rota for interventional and general cardiology, including primary angioplasty. Overall, the clinical portion of the job involves providing just under a half share of an academic interventional cardiology firm, set up as part of this initiative, with Prof Curzen (this balance reflects his ongoing commitment to the clinical TAVI service). Clinical responsibilities will be based upon the following timetable, but the specific job plan will be negotiated with the Clinical Director 1 in 12 on call for primary PCI and other cath lab emergencies 1 in 12 on call for CCU/High Care/Ward emergencies and acute admissions Alternate weeks: Monday pm Cath Lab – PCI list Tuesday am Outpatients Tuesday pm Ward Round Every Week: Monday am Cardiothoracic MDT Tuesday am: Teaching angio review Thursday am: Journal Club Friday am: Grand Round Share supervision of junior medical staff with consultant colleagues. Participate in audit, clinical effectiveness and clinical governance initiatives as required by the Trust and commissioners. Participate in continuing medical education, as well as continuing professional development. Play role as necessary to develop UHS cardiology services Internal and external relationships Member of the Academic Unit Board, Examination Board and of such Academic Unit committees relevant to their administrative duties. The post holder will take a leading role in the setting of strategic objectives for the research theme of which they are a member. Teaching and administrative duties will be allocated by the Head of Academic Unit, within the context of the teaching programmes agreed by the Academic Unit Learning and Teaching Committee. 3 Special Requirements To attend national and international conferences for the purpose of disseminating research results. To be available to participate in residential fieldwork, in the UK or overseas, according to own area of subject specialism.
