Goals: GOAL 1: GOAL 2: GOAL 3: Prepare investigators and research personnel to be competitive in securing external funding and successful in conducting ethical human research. Distinguish ourselves by our ability to train and prepare ethical human research activities. Assist faculty in creating a strong, sustainable community outreach and engagement program. Outcome Objective: To increase OHRI’s educational outreach by 25% during FY 2010-2013. Measure(s): The number of Brown Bag Lunch sessions will increase from 12 to 24 sessions. Improve access to educational materials by creating 4 web-cast presentations. Add assessment of educational content and delivery methodology via focus group discussions on a quarterly basis. Outcome Objective: To enhance the level of professional expertise among OHRI staff. Measure(s): Staff will receive current and timely information on interpretation of federal regulations and guidance at staff meetings held at least three times monthly. Goal 2: Distinguish ourselves by our ability to train and prepare ethical human research activities. Outcome Objective: To enhance credentials of staff members. Measure(s): Establish a requirement that staff member must become Certified IRB Professionals as soon as they meet the eligibility criteria. Staff will attend a minimum of two workshops on ethical issues related to human research protections. Educational materials, including presentations and pocket brochures, will be developed on Ethical Decision Making. Outcome Objective: Minimize risk to participants of research by improving faculty access to critical information. Measure(s): A minimum of 15 outreach activities will be provided to faculty, staff and students on the responsibilities they hold when conducting community outreach and engagement research. Development and distribution of a Quick Reference Guide that outlines the additional responsibilities investigators assume when partnering with the community. Goal 4: Enhance our efforts to meet and exceed regulatory standards. Outcome Objective: Create an efficient and conducive research environment to elevate the quality and ease of conducting human research at ECU. Measure(s): Development and launch of a paper-less, web-based IRB application, review and tracking system. Increase resources both fiscal and human to advance our efforts toward accreditation of the human research protections program. Documented self-assessment of viability of accreditation, within the next five years, for ECU’s human research protections program.
