Second Sunday of Easter

MIDDLETOWN, N J
Dear Parishioners,
Divine Mercy devotions will be led today beginning at 2:45 p.m. in Church. The leader of prayer will be
Deacon Bob. All are invited to participate.
Please continue to pray for those beginning to receive the Eucharist. During the next four weeks, we will
welcome those to the Altar as a parish community. Be always conscious that these young people need our example
and our prayers. Pray for their families - that the presence of Jesus will challenge each member to spiritual growth.
Pray also for those preparing to receive Confirmation on April 27th. They are completing their initiation as
Catholics and beginning a life-long journey of discipleship of Jesus.
Fr. Joe and I will celebrate Mass for all BARN volunteers on April 23rd, at 7:30 p.m. IN Mary, Mother of
God Church. All volunteers are invited to participate. I know there are many who volunteer at the BARN from our
schools. Please pass the word to all of them that they are invited. If you wish to know more about the ministry of
the BARN, please come, as there will be refreshments served in the Narthex after Mass. In the bulletin, you will
find regular pieces sent in by Camille that show where the need for help is at any particular time. This help is not
just for the night trip but for work at the warehouse and also for daytime food pick-ups at various locations.
As you can see from the bulletin announcements recently, there are several hours in the Adoration Chapel
that need someone to commit to. I encourage everyone to hear the call to commit to a given hour of prayer for our
parish in the Adoration Chapel. If you feel that you cannot commit to every week – team up with a friend and take
on the commitment together or even multiple family members and friends. Make it a great act of faith by you and
your friends to be present for this hour each week.
You have seen the summer program materials in the Narthex from our parish schools. If you need further
information on any of them please call the schools (Mater Dei Prep 732-671-9100 or St. Mary School, 671-0129). If there is
some area that you would like a program offered and you cannot find it on the material check with the staff
members in our schools.
We are looking ahead to our Parish Fair. It will run this year from June 25th to June 30th. This week we
mailed the raffle tickets. Thank you for receiving them. If you did not get tickets please call us and we will send
them to you. The Fair Team asks that you keep the tickets convenient so that you can invite as many people as
possible to purchase them. The prizes are very attractive to people. Do your best to sell all the tickets. The Raffles
are the backbone (as it were) of the funding for the Fair and the more participation we have - the more successful
the Fair will be. Please also tell your friends and neighbors about our Fair.
Invite them to join you there.
God bless you as we continue to celebrate the Easter Season,
Fr. Mike

SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
A Turning Point – A Defining Moment
After the completion of the Christian Initiation in the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and
Eucharist, our newly baptized and newly received Catholics are participating in the period of MYSTAGOGY
or post baptismal catechesis.
This catechesis leads them to a deeper appreciation and understanding of the mysteries experienced
and celebrated at the Easter Vigil. Through memory of the Holy Saturday Vigil, the mysteries are brought
into the present, and the newly received Catholics echo the meaning contained within them – a meaning
gleaned from experience.
THEREFORE, MYSTAGOGICAL CATECHESIS WEDS TRUTH AND
EXPERIENCE.

My RCIA Journey
“The Holy Spirit calls upon us and inspires us to live the lives that we should. That
calling is what brought me to join the RCIA process and it has been an opportunity of a
lifetime. The knowledge that I have gained has changed my life and strengthened my beliefs. I have met
people that I will remember forever and I made relationships that have enhanced who I am. All of this is
because of the people that I have met. I have grown to love Sister Gloria and all of our other presenters and
team members. This process has not only been a development in my religion, but it has enhanced my life as
a whole. I am so grateful for the opportunity of the RCIA process, as I realize that this is just the beginning.
I will continue to grow at St. Mary’s and look forward to my journey to come. I thank you all for this
opportunity and for giving of yourselves for my growth in the spiritual life.

SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER
St. Mary’s Faith Community Nursing Ministry
Ways to Keep Your Family Healthy
Let’s start with your kids –
1. Be consistent about bedtime. Even on weekends. Shifting sleep patterns can disrupt a child’s
sleep-wake rhythm, making it hard for him/her to get enough sleep.
2. Keep the line of communication open with your teen. Listen a lot, be shocked at nothing, be as
uncritical as you can.
3. Even if a physical symptom has an emotional cause (say a stomach ache the morning of a big
exam) don’t brush it aside. Treat it and tell your child it is a natural response.
4. Parents play a key role in a child’s fitness. Instill at an early age an interest in physical activity.
5. Meat loaf, casseroles and sauces are a great place to hide whole grains and minced veggies that
kids won’t normally eat.
6. We all need to vent at times, and “we” includes children, too. Whether it’s anger, sadness or
perplexity over a problem, talking clarifies things, relieves strain and helps with emotional
development.
7. Healthy children yearn for independence. Give them the freedom to explore, make friends and try
new things.
8. Make the atmosphere at home so that it nourishes children with affection and understanding
backed with discipline, and they will grow in health and grace.
9. Eat dinner as a family often. Research shows that your kids will be more likely to eat fruits and
veggies as adults.
10. REMEMBER, THE TWO GREATEST GIFTS PARENTS CAN GIVE THEIR CHILDREN ARE
ROOTS AND WINGS!

Maire Merritt will be our speaker and give us more information on a Retreat to bring people from
their everyday place of struggle with illness, chores, bills, etc. to a place of beauty, peace, music and
laughter. A place where they can take “time out” for God and hear of His Presence with them on
their journey. Retreatants go back to their home or care facility, often with a renewed sense of
God’s faithfulness to share with those around them. The big surprise is there is no cost for this
retreat. There are two retreat s scheduled in 2012 – May 18, 19, and 20th, and October 19, 20 and

SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER
Nurturing generous disciples to serve
as the hands and feet of Christ
“The community of believers was of one heart and mind
and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own.”
-ACTS 4:32
Stewardship calls us to recognize, just as the early Christians did, that none of
our possessions is our own. All that we have – our health, our education, our
skills, our talents, and our livelihood – are gifts from God.
The natural reaction when someone gives you a gift is to want to give something
back.
What do you give back to God?
