Explanation: As soon as AC was available, factories used it for their supplies (“the product”). The
workers’ conditions only came later. Even when their conditions were made better, it was only “as it
resulted in higher production levels”, so clearly they cared primarily about “the product”. (1 mark)

Part E: Summary - Write a summary paragraph (4-6 sentences) for this article.
/5.5
In “Air conditioning”, the author describes how AC developed in America, how it has changed
many types of design both in the USA and around the world, and how people are trying to deal with
some of its negative effects (summary “thesis statement”). Air conditioning was first used in the USA in
the early 1900s to make factories more productive, and it soon spread into public places. Houses became
lower and more private, commercial spaces became larger and more combined at the expense of smaller
downtown businesses, and cities’ appearances changed because AC could compensate for factors that
used to limit building design, like height and materials. Once AC use became common, it also allowed
people to comfortably live in different areas of the USA, especially the hotter southern states, which
attracted more people to live there. Nowadays, it is also used around the world to help businesses be
more competitive and to show their success. Unfortunately, AC uses a great deal of energy, which has
significant environmental impact, but many countries are working together to rectify the situation.
