48 hours booking:
These are the appointment slots which are open for booking only two days in advance. i.e.
Monday’s 48hours appointment slots will be released on Thursday for booking. This will enable
patients, who are keen to see a doctor within next two working days, to book an appointment.

Home Visits
If possible please try to telephone reception before 10am if you require a home visit.
A doctor or nurse may phone you back as it may be that your problem can be dealt with by
telephone advice, or that it would be more appropriate to send a nurse, or indeed arrange a
hospital attendance.
House visits are only available for patients who are housebound because of illness or disability.
Please remember that several patients can be seen in the practice in the time that it takes to make
one home visit. There are also better facilities for examining and treating patients at the Health
Centre.

permission for the release of this data or they are not capable of understanding the results.

Clinics & Services
Clinics
At the Old Kent Road Surgery we provide the following medical services
Antenatal Clinic
If you think you are pregnant come and see one of our GPs / Nurses and bring a sample of urine
(the first that you pass in the morning).
Once your pregnancy is confirmed then you will be referred to community midwife. We operate
a shared system of antenatal care, i.e. antenatal care is shared between two or three of the
following:



Your GP
Your Midwife:
High Risk Clinics: The Old Kent Road Surgery provides antenatal services for people
with added risk during pregnancy. We have a Specialist Obstetric Team from St Thomas'
Hospital who provide an antenatal service in the Surgery once per week on a Monday
morning.
Adult Vaccination
Why might some adults need vaccines? Some adults incorrectly assume that the vaccines they
received as children will protect them for the rest of their lives. Generally this is true, except that:




Some adults were never vaccinated as children
Newer vaccines were not available when some adults were children
Immunity can begin to fade over time
As we age, we become more susceptible to serious disease caused by common infections
(e.g., flu, pneumococcus)
We run adult vaccination clinic by appointment only so please book an appointment with one of
our nurses.
Asthma Clinic
A nurse will assess your level of asthma symptoms, give you information about asthma and
ensure you are taking your medication correctly. If you are having problems the nurse will refer
you to your GP.
We will send you an appointment every 3, 6 or 12 months depending on the severity of your
condition. If you would like to attend this clinic, please book an appointment with one of our
nurses.
Baby Clinic
All children are invited to see the doctor for a health and development check at about 6 weeks.
Later checks are carried out by the Health Visitors and School Nurses. Please bring your "red"
book when you come.
Routine childhood vaccinations can be done at this clinic - or if you prefer a different time please
make an appointment with one of our nurses.
Benefits & Welfare Rights
We offer advise on Benefits & Welfare rights to our patients. A qualified benefits advisor attends
the practice once a week, on Wednesdays. To see her you will need to make an appointment at
the reception.
For housing issues, please contact your local council or housing association.
Cervical Screening Programme
We offer cervical screening, which involves a simple examination to check the health of a
woman’s cervix. If abnormal cells are found, in many cases they will go back to normal on their
own, but sometimes they continue to develop. If left untreated, these cells may eventually
develop into cancer. Cervical cancer can easily be prevented if abnormal changes are found and
treated early.
The Department of Health recommends that women between the ages of 20 and 64 have routine
cervical smears every three to five years as part of the NHS Screening Programme.
Statistics show that a woman’s risk of cervical cancer is cut by 84% if she has a smear test every
five years, and 91% if she has a smear every three years. Please book an appointment with one of
our nurses for your smear test.
Contraception
The doctors and nurses are very happy to offer you advice on contraception in complete
confidence. We don't hold a special clinic for contraception, just make an appointment, with one
of our nurses or doctors, during surgery time.
Counselling / Psychology Clinic
We offer an in-house couselling service. The counselling is facilitated by a qualified psychologist
who runs psychology clinic twice a week, Tuesday and Wednesday by appointment only.
If you would like to see her, please see one of our GPs who will assess your condition and if
necessary will refer you to the psychologist.
Diabetic Clinic
We offer a comprehensive diabetes screening service including screening for retinopathy,
neuropathy and nephropathy (eyes, nerves and kidneys). We also offer cardiac and lipid
screening for people with diabetes, and refer to the dietician.
We offer advice on insulin therapy and oral medication. Measurement of glycosylated
haemoglobin (Hba1c), triglycerides and proteinuria is a routine part of our screening.
