‘Congratulations’ from the Mayor

Councillor David Wood, Mayor of Epsom & Ewell Borough Council congratulated Maureen Collins when she celebrated her 30th anniversary in working for Epsom & Ewell Citizens Advice Bureau.

The Mayor presented Maureen with some flowers and a personal letter in which he said, “Your immense knowledge and expertise gained during your long service, willingly shared with all the staff and volunteers, has been invaluable to the Bureau, and continues to be so.

“Maureen, I would like to congratulate and thank you on behalf of the Borough of

Epsom & Ewell on your great achievement of completing 30 years of dedicated service to Epsom and Ewell Citizens Advice Bureau.”

Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) Board of Directors (Trustees) joined the Mayor in congratulating Maureen, as it was on 14 February 1977 that she applied to become a volunteer ‘worker’ for Epsom & Ewell. She completed her basic training course and had her appointment as a volunteer worker for Epsom & Ewell CAB was confirmed by the National Association on 3rd March 1978.

During her time with the CAB she has ‘resided’ in four bureau locations: The

Cedars, 7 The Parade, 2 The Pines in The Parade and now at the Old Town Hall.

In each location she has met the many challenges presented due to changes in the service head on; such as a new membership scheme introducing strict audit requirements to the introduction of computerised information and client recording system.

For many years Maureen was the Secretary to the Trustee Board (originally the

Borough Council is made up of residents associations which hold 27 of the 38 seats. The Liberal

Democrat party has seven seats, the Labour

Party has three and the

Conservative Party has one.

Epsom & Ewell borders

The Royal Borough of

Kingston-upon-Thames, the London Borough of

Sutton, the Borough of

Reigate & Banstead and the

District of Mole Valley.

~

The population is approximately 67,000. The

Borough has the smallest population of all the districts within the

County of Surrey.

~

There are 13,000 residents over the age of 65 and

15,500 under the age of 20.

~

Under 35,000 residents are economically active and

25,000 people work in the

Borough.

~

Epsom & Ewell has around

2,000 acres of open space including Epsom Common,

Horton Country Park and

Rosebery Park, named after the former Prime

Minister, Lord Rosebery who lived in the area.

~

Epsom & Ewell was bombed during World War

Two.

~

Epsom was once famous as a spa town during the

1600s. The water from its

Wells contained Epsom

Salts. Diarist Samuel Pepys was a frequent visitor.

Management Committee). She is responsible for promoting and co-ordinating the social policy work in the bureau, having represented the bureau on the South East

Social Policy group in the past and is now a member of the local Social Policy

Cluster Group.

Ann Flower, CAB Manager said, “Maureen is a tower of strength in the Bureau, assisting and supporting the volunteers, both advisers and administrative/support workers. Her knowledge and expertise is of immense value to the bureau and the service; her dedication to the CAB and its clients in Epsom & Ewell continues and her maxim is ‘the client comes first’.”
