Portico and American Geophysical Union sign archiving deal
Non-profit electronic archiving service provider Portico has announced an agreement with the
American Geophysical Union (AGU) to preserve 10 online journals. With this inclusion, over 10,700
e-journals and 34,000 e-books from 92 publishers on behalf of over 2,000 societies and associations
have now been entrusted to the Portico archive.

Nielsen Book partners with Library Multimedia Supplies
Nielsen Book, part of global information and media group Nielsen Company, has announced an
agreement with library audio visual (AV) supplier, Library Multimedia Supplies (LMS). LMS is part of
the Pilton Group of companies which in turn is a wholly owned subsidiary of DCC Plc.

Thomson Reuters acquires Discovery Logic, Inc
Information services provider Thomson Reuters has announced the acquisition of Discovery Logic,
Inc, a provider of customisable analytics and decision support solutions for scientific research.
Effective immediately, the company is part of the Healthcare & Science business of Thomson
Reuters. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Elsevier acquires NurseSquared electronic health record training tool
STM publisher Elsevier has announced the acquisition of NurseSquared, an electronic health record
(EHR) training product that teaches students how to properly document using a simulated EHR. The
acquisition is effective immediately. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

CQ Press implements RSuite to manage complex staff directories content
Enterprise software vendor RSuite has announced that CQ Press, a division of academic publisher
SAGE, has successfully implemented RSuite to manage the latter's complex staff directories content.
RSuite was selected to manage CQ Press' XML and related assets and become the company's single
repository for all directory content. Initial testing began with three titles in February 2009.

Bloomsbury Publishing, Qatar Foundation and QNRF partner to launch new scientific publishing
house
Publishing house Bloomsbury Publishing, Qatar Foundation and Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF)
have announced the launch of a new scientific publishing house to be based in Doha, Qatar. The
new publishing house, Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Journals (BQFJ), will publish scientific research
developed to the highest international peer review standards.

Springer launches new journal - Review of Philosophy and Psychology
STM publisher Springer has announced the launch of a new journal - Review of Philosophy and
Psychology (RPP). The journal, scheduled for launch in March 2010, will focus on research trends at
the intersection of philosophy, psychology and cognitive science. Dario Taraborelli of the University
of Surrey in the UK will serve as the editor-in-chief.

Serials Solutions announces Medical Subject Headings for KnowledgeWorks and 360 Services
E-Resource Access and Management Services (ERAMS) provider Serials Solutions has enhanced the
360 services to improve e-resource access and management at medical libraries. Users can now
browse and find resources using the 2009 Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) through the 360 Core EJournal portal.

EBSCO unveils customised index search service for enterprises
Electronic research databases provider EBSCO Publishing has announced the release of EBSCO
Discovery Service (EDS). The service seeks to create a unified, customised index of an institution’s
information resources and provides access via a single search box. Metadata is harvested from both
internal (library) and external (vendors) sources, creating a pre-indexed service of significant size
and speed.

ebrary extends Patron Driven Acquisition programme for academic libraries
Digital content products and technologies provider ebrary has announced that it is extending the
Patron Driven Acquisition (PDA) pilot programme for academic libraries through Spring 2010. The
company intends to launch its finalised PDA product this summer. Additionally, ebrary is conducting
a survey to better understand libraries' needs and challenges with regard to PDA models. Results will
be available later this year.

Thomson Reuters plans data-driven profiles of research institutions
Information services provider Thomson Reuters has announced that it has begun working with
thousands of institutions and research facilities to produce a new resource. The initiative, called
the Global Institutional Profiles Project, will seek to create data-driven portraits of globally
significant research institutions. It would look to combine peer review, scholarly outputs, citation
patterns, funding levels and faculty characteristics in one comprehensive database.

American Chemical Society launches Chinese news site on EurekAlert!
The American Chemical Society (ACS) Office of Public Affairs has launched a Chinese-language news
site on EurekAlert!, an online science news service sponsored by American Association for the
Advancement of Science (AAAS). The ACS Chinese site will feature reports from research papers
authored by Chinese scientists that have appeared in the ACS News Service Weekly PressPac, a
collection of press releases based on research selected from ACS' 38 peer-reviewed journals and
Chemical & Engineering News (C&EN), the Society's weekly newsmagazine.

EBSCO to launch ERM Essentials following beta test results
Information services provider EBSCO is set to launch EBSCONET ERM Essentials, which seeks to offer
key features that librarians need to simplify management of their e-resources. In 2009, 25 library
customers partnered with EBSCO to beta-test ERM Essentials in two phases with an initial round
during the spring and a second phase beginning in mid-October. The launch of ERM Essentials is
slated to coincide with ALA Midwinter 2010.

Reed Business Information likely to close titles, announce job cuts
In a year-end memo, the current CEO of B2B publisher Reed Business Information (RBI) has stated
that the company has not been able to sell a majority stake in its US-based magazine division as a
whole. As a result, it will need to close certain titles and lay off a number of employees during the
first half of 2010.

Ten Wiley-Blackwell journals to adopt 'condense and rotate' printing process
STM and scholarly publisher Wiley-Blackwell has announced that starting from the first issues of
2010, ten Wiley-Blackwell journals will adopt a 'condense and rotate' printing process, also known as
two-up printing. The new approach is expected to reduce the carbon footprint associated with
printing and distributing the journals by about 40 percent.

Journal editor criticised for financial ties with medical devices maker
A Milwaukee Journal Sentinel analysis has found that Thomas Zdeblick, editor-in-chief of the
medical journal Journal of Spinal Disorders & Techniques, failed to disclose ties to spinal- and
heart-device maker Medtronic. The editor reportedly received millions in royalties for promoting
Medtronic spinal products through the journal.

Allen Press' annual seminar to discuss industry challenges and opportunities
Publishing services provider Allen Press, Inc. has announced that it will present its annual Emerging
Trends in Scholarly Publishing Seminar at the Capitol Hilton in Washington, DC on April 8, 2010. This
year's seminar is titled 'Scholarly Publishing: Boldly Going Where No Journal Has Gone Before.' Kent
