Title Maintenance Worker I

General Position Summary:
Responsible for the regular and routine maintenance and upkeep of the grounds,
facilities, and equipment of the department. Sets up and assists in the completion of
work projects; ensures that safety standards and procedures are being followed on site.
The Maintenance Worker I will be cross trained in the various functions of Public Works,
and will often be required to operate in other divisions.
For Parks:
Performs maintenance, repair, and grounds keeping for all city parks, including
mowing, weed eating, trimming, spraying, debris removal, and garbage
collection. Inspects, repairs, and maintains play grounds and playing fields.
Installs and maintains irrigation systems. Prepares equipment and grounds for
changing seasons.
For Cemetery:
Performs maintenance, repair and grounds keeping for the City Cemetery,
including mowing, weed eating, trimming, spraying, debris removal and garbage
collection. Use pressure washer to clean all concrete surfaces and headstones
per work order. Assist set-up and pouring of headstones, grave digging and
burials. Prepares equipment and grounds for changing seasons. Cross train in
Maintenance Worker I – Parks and Building division tasks.
For Publicly Owned Treatment Works (POTW):
Performs various lab tests on water samples from specific points of the treatment
process to track water quality flowing to and from the POTW plant; enters data
and maintains records of sample collection and lab analysis. Maintains and
repairs process equipment, facilities, and grounds.
For Streets/Storm:
Performs regular and recurring maintenance on city street and storm systems
including, streets and sidewalks, traffic signs, right-of-ways, and traffic control

devices. Operates and conducts general maintenance on boom mowers, street
sweeper, and snow removal equipment.
For Water/Sewer:
Reads and replaces water meters. Calls in locates for excavations. Taps and
installs new water/sewer services throughout the city. Repairs and services
waterlines and fire hydrants. Performs lift station checks and maintenance;
flushes and repairs collection system mainline, laterals, and manholes. Takes
water samples for water quality testing. Handles customer questions, concerns,
and complaints.
Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities:

division/department. Set up and assist in completion of various work projects. Ensure
safety guidelines are being followed. Perform other duties as needed.
For Parks:
 Maintain turf and grounds, including mowing, weed eating, trimming, and
spraying
 Plant, transplant, and prune grass, trees, and shrubs on grounds
 Apply pesticides as needed
 Install irrigation systems; repair and make adjustments to irrigation systems
 Collect and dispose of trash on a regular basis
 Inspect, repair, and maintain play grounds
 Repair problems with playing fields; prepare playing fields for games and events
 Maintain and repair fences, pathways, and retaining walls
 Remove debris from grounds and parking lots
 Clean restrooms; maintain and repair restroom locks
 Maintain cemetery grounds; prepare and close gravesites
 Repair roadways and parking lots as needed
 Complete various painting projects, including picnic tables, buildings, and
equipment
 Open and winterize park restrooms; winterize and prep irrigation systems for the
fall, winter, and spring
For Cemetery:

Maintain turf and grounds, including mowing, weed eating, trimming, and
spraying

Plant, transplant, and prune grass, trees, and shrubs on grounds

Apply pesticides as needed

Install irrigation systems; repair and make adjustments to irrigation systems

Collect and dispose of trash on a regular basis

Inspect, repair, maintain, assist in layout/digging of graves

Inspect, adjust, clean, assist in layout/pouring/placement of headstones
Maintain and repair fences, pathways and retaining walls
Remove debris from grounds and parking lots
Clean restrooms, maintain and repair restroom locks
Prepare Cemetery ground for memorial Day Weekend ceremonies
Repair roadways and parking lots as needed
Develop knowledge base to assist customers searching for graves or inquiring
about prices and services
Open and winterize Cemetery restrooms
For Publicly Owned Treatment Works (POTW):
 Perform various lab tests daily on water samples from specific points of the
treatment process to track water quality flowing from Water Treatment Plant into
Columbia River (i.e. BOD, TSS, PH, Ammonia)
 Use lab test results to adjust process equipment, keeping discharges within
guidelines of Washington State Department of Ecology
 Inspect water tank levels, chlorine tanks, and well heads
 Operate pumps and valving to maintain water levels in aeration ponds
 Clean and repair headworks as needed
 Keep records of machine and equipment run time hours
 Log maintenance and repairs of equipment
 Maintain inventory and order supplies
 Dredge and apply Biosolids; perform dredge setup and maintenance
For Streets/Storm:
 Repair streets and sidewalks
 Replace damaged traffic signs
 Operate single axle dump truck
 Clean vaults, catch basins, and drywells with vacuum truck
 Operate snow removal equipment, front loader, backhoe, and street sweeper
 Mow grass and trim vegetation in City right-of-ways
 Paint traffic control devices
 Inspect sidewalks, streetlight outages, and storm locates
 Perform maintenance on storm swales
For Water/Sewer:
 Tap and install new water services
 Read meters and water/sewer locates; test and maintain commercial meters
 Repair and flush water lines
 Perform lift station checks; clean sewers
 Use boom mower at reservoir sites
 Prepare samples for water quality testing; test for chlorine and ph levels
 Install, service, and repair fire hydrants
 Fabricate various steel structures

Answer customer questions; handle customer concerns and complaints
Provide input in field operations
Perform final construction punchlists; assist with construction projects
Maintain various records and files for the water/sewer division
Secondary Functions:

Assure cleanliness of fleet vehicles and equipment

Job Scope:
This position involves recurring work responsibilities, with a wide diversity of work
situations. The incumbent operates from established and well known
procedures. The position involves a moderate level of complexity in the
operation of various equipment and machinery. The POTW and Water/Sewer
positions involve a higher level of complexity in performing and interpreting a
variety of lab tests. The Maintenance Worker I operates under a moderate
degree of supervision. Work will often be verified by the Maintenance Worker III
and/or Division Manager positions. An error in work could slow the time and
productivity of the department, and in some cases result in a noncompliance with
required standards, possibly leading to fines and/or other legal action against the
City. Errors in equipment repair or street/storm maintenance could result in
accident or injury to the public or City employees. Errors in lab testing could lead
to unsafe water or violation of NPDES Permit.
Supervisory Responsibility:
The Maintenance Worker I holds no supervisory authority. However, the
incumbent may be asked to assure that seasonal and/or temporary workers are
on task and working productively.
Interpersonal Contacts:
This position involves frequent communication with others within the City.
Internal contacts are mostly made both within the Public Works department.
External contacts occur less frequently, and are mostly made with citizens,
contractors, and various work crews. Dependent on the situation, contacts may
be made on the incumbent’s own initiative or at the supervisor’s request. These
contacts are seldom about confidential or sensitive matters, and occur most often
in person or on the phone.

For Cemetery:

 Proper tree trimming techniques, timing and accurate tool use
 Knowledge of working safely and courteously around the public. Ability to
demonstrate thoughtful manners and mourning family/friends of deceased.
 Ability to learn to read Cemetery maps, demonstrate precise measurement with a
tape measure, and exercise sometimes tedious procedures to layout a grave or
headstone

trucks, etc.

Job Conditions:
The normal working hours for the Maintenance Worker I are 8:00 am to 4:30 pm,
Monday through Friday, in mostly outside environments. Hours of operation may
vary seasonally, and on-call status may be required. The incumbent may
experience daily exposure to high noise levels, extreme temperatures, outside

work, work around machinery, harmful gasses and laboratory chemicals, raw
sewage, confined spaces where exposure to hazardous air conditions may exist,
and exposure to blood-born pathogens. Heavy manual labor, heavy lifting, and
constant standing are required. This position is responsible for maintaining the
city property and equipment under his or her control. Maintenance Worker I also
may be responsible for various daily recordkeeping and reporting for his or her
division.
