Metamorphic Rock ID Lab
Geology Rox!
Name _______________________________
Per ______________
Hello there ladies and gents. This lab works the same as the Sed Rox ID lab and the
Igneous Rox ID lab. You will be identifying some metamorphic rox and then answering
some questions.
VOCAB: Please define these in your notebooks! Thank you.
Metamorphism
Recrystallization
Foliation
Contact Metamorphism
Regional Metamorphism
You will need your Metamorphic Rox NOTES and…of course…your wonderfully
relevant and helpful ESRT (the meta rock classification chart). Good luck, young Jedi.
Once the rocks are ID’d on the ID sheet, answer these questions.
1) What are metamorphic rocks made from?
__________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________
2) What are the 2 conditions needed to change a preexisting rock into a metamorphic
rock? (look at the rock cycle!) __________________________ and
____________________
3) What are foliation and banding?
__________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________
4) What are 2 types of metamorphism? ____________________________ and
____________________________________
5) What kind of metamorphism occurs next to an igneous intrusion of molten
magma? _______________________________________
6) What process is involved in the formation of all igneous rocks, but not in the
formation of metamorphic rocks? ___________________________________
7) In what parts of NYS are metamorphic rocks most common?
__________________________________________________________________
________________________
8) Which foliated metamorphic rock has the smallest crystals?
________________________
9) What mineral family can the mica minerals change into when gneiss is formed?
________________________________________
10) What sedimentary rock can change into marble? __________________________
11) Of the metamorphic minerals shown in the chart under Composition, which one
seems to require the most heat and pressure, so it’s generally seen only in gneiss
or high grade schist? _____________________________________
12) What mineral family is often found in the most foliated metamorphic rocks?
________________________________
13) In what 2 ways does metaconglomerate often differ from a sedimentary
conglomerate?
__________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________
14) Which type of metamorphic rock is usually foliated and banded?
___________________________________
15) Only one metamorphic rock is always formed by contact metamorphism. What is
it? ___________________________
16) What group of minerals usually gives schist a strong foliation?
_______________________
17) Which kind of metamorphic rocks is found in the Adirondack Mountains in NYS?
(You probably should look at page 3 of the ESRT)
