Big6 Research Project - Biography Big6 Step #1 – Task Definition 1.1 Students will select a biography on their level to read from the media center. After reading the biography and passing the AR test with a 70 or higher students will research and take notes on their famous person. Students will organize their note cards in tree map form. Students will choose an activity or product to present their research. 1.2 What information do students need to know in order to accomplish the task? Background Adulthood Where were they born? What was their childhood like? (youth) How many people were in their family? What did their parents do? What were their parents like? What was their career? (job, profession) What are they known for? Did they have obstacles to overcome? What was their goal? (purpose, target, aspiration) How did they accomplish it? (achieve, carry out, complete) How is their goal important to us? What did this person do to help society? (culture) What obstacles, if any, did they overcome? (problem, barrier, obstruction) How did they make a difference? Why is it important for us to remember them? What are some important events in their lives? Imagine how the world would be if this person didn’t exist. What do you think of your person’s accomplishment? (achievement, success, triumph) What is your opinion of your person? Schooling Did they have an education? (schooling) Where did they go to school? How far did they get in school? Did they go to college? Big6 #2.1 and 2.2 Information Seeking Strategies Students will use 3 resources for their research and notes. 1) The biography read from the library 2) A Website of their choosing 3) A print resource of their choosing – Encyclopedia, Magazine Article, Almanac, Other Library Book or Reference Book Big6 #3 Locate and Access All research materials for this project will come from the North Cove Library. Big6 #4 Use of Information Students will create note cards from each source. Students must have 5 to 10 Note Cards from each resource. Students must put the source on the back of each Note Card. Students will organize their note cards in tree map form. Big6 #5 Synthesis Students will choose a way to present information on their famous person from the list below or other ideas may be submitted to Ms. Olson for approval. Evaluation will be by students, teacher, and librarian.
