MASTER - PROGRAMME IN ECONOMICS AND LAW
(M.A. Wirtschafts- und Rechtswissenschaften)
Profound knowledge of the analytical methods of economics and law is a key asset in many
careers, in the private sector as well as the public sector and in NGO activities. Working in
globalized markets, transnational networks or international organizations, academically
trained persons are increasingly expected to be able to understand and deal with both the
economic and the legal aspects of the problems at hand. Dual qualifications are demanded
both of general managers in small and medium-sized firms and of mediating specialists in
larger firms and organizations. To both groups the Oldenburg MA in Economics and Law
offers a programme that combines a general framework of advanced-level introductory
courses in economics and law with a range of specializations. The University of Oldenburg is
especially well suited for bi- and interdisciplinary programmes of this kind, since the Faculty
has a long-standing tradition in combining studies in economics and law.

The MA degree in Economics & Law is based on a programme of four semesters (120 ECTS).
The general framework consists of five base modules in Economics, Management, Law and
Methods in the first semester and two further base modules in semesters 2 and 3 (see the table
above). In Economics and Law, students choose 2 out of 3 modules, depending on their prior
qualification and specialization interests. In Methods the choice is 1 out of 5, since there are
two different courses in Statistics (Introduction to Statistics; Multivariate Statistics) as well as
in Professional English (Legal English; Business & Economics English).

Each module consists of a combination of lectures and/or seminars and/or tutorials plus
independent work, totally amounting to about 180 hours and 6 credit points / ECTS. The
modules marked with asterisk (*) are offered in English (the full range of English-language
modules is described below).
In the second and third semesters students study eight modules in their area of specialization.
Five or six of these modules are mandatory, the remaining supplementary modules may be
chosen freely from a large range, but some courses in disciplines related to the chosen area of
specialization are especially recommended. In the fourth semester students will write their
Master thesis, normally in their area of specialization. The process of preparing and writing
the thesis is supported by a special seminar in research methods.
There are six areas of specialization:
 Transnational Economics and Law (TEL)
 Economic and Commercial Law (Recht der Wirtschaft, RdW)
 Corporate Governance and Social Organization (Führung von Unternehmen und soziale
Organisation, FUGO)
 Auditing, Finance, Taxation (AFT)
 Management, Entrepreneurship, Controlling (ManECo)
 China – Economy and Language (CHI)
In the following, each of these specializations is presented by the table of modules. For TEL, the
specialization with most courses in English language, we provide also the general description. The
general descriptions of the other specializations can be found on the MA websites (URL at the end
of this document).

This specialization is aimed at providing a background in economics and law for people who
plan to work in international organizations, multinational enterprises or transnational
networks (such as supply chains). The core of the specialization consists of two law and two
economics modules plus an interdisciplinary project, in which the students will write a
monograph on specific problems of transnational regulation of economic relations in
teamwork. All five core modules are in English; some of the supplementary modules may be
offered in German only.

Options for Exchange Students
Exchange students from partner universities may choose their modules rather freely (with due
consideration of capacity constraints). Most of the courses will be offered in German. However, it is
also possible to study five modules per semester completely in English. For the first semesters, the
following selection of modules in English can be guaranteed:

** The last two modules in the columns are "imports" from the Oldenburg MA programme in
Sustainability Economics and Management, which can be chosen freely as supplementary
modules anyway. In the future, probably more modules in the MA programme Economics and
Law will be offered in English.
