MASTER - PROGRAMME IN ECONOMICS AND LAW (M.A. Wirtschafts- und Rechtswissenschaften) Profound knowledge of the analytical methods of economics and law is a key asset in many careers, in the private sector as well as the public sector and in NGO activities. Working in globalized markets, transnational networks or international organizations, academically trained persons are increasingly expected to be able to understand and deal with both the economic and the legal aspects of the problems at hand. Dual qualifications are demanded both of general managers in small and medium-sized firms and of mediating specialists in larger firms and organizations. To both groups the Oldenburg MA in Economics and Law offers a programme that combines a general framework of advanced-level introductory courses in economics and law with a range of specializations. The University of Oldenburg is especially well suited for bi- and interdisciplinary programmes of this kind, since the Faculty has a long-standing tradition in combining studies in economics and law. The general framework consists of five base modules in Economics, Management, Law and Methods in the first semester and two further base modules in semesters 2 and 3 (see the table above). In Economics and Law, students choose 2 out of 3 modules, depending on their prior qualification and specialization interests. In Methods the choice is 1 out of 5, since there are two different courses in Statistics (Introduction to Statistics; Multivariate Statistics) as well as in Professional English (Legal English; Business & Economics English). V 3 September 2009 2 Each module consists of a combination of lectures and/or seminars and/or tutorials plus independent work, totally amounting to about 180 hours and 6 credit points / ECTS. The modules marked with asterisk (*) are offered in English (the full range of English-language modules is described below). In the second and third semesters students study eight modules in their area of specialization. Five or six of these modules are mandatory, the remaining supplementary modules may be chosen freely from a large range, but some courses in disciplines related to the chosen area of specialization are especially recommended. In the fourth semester students will write their Master thesis, normally in their area of specialization. The process of preparing and writing the thesis is supported by a special seminar in research methods. There are six areas of specialization: Transnational Economics and Law (TEL) Economic and Commercial Law (Recht der Wirtschaft, RdW) Corporate Governance and Social Organization (Führung von Unternehmen und soziale Organisation, FUGO) Auditing, Finance, Taxation (AFT) Management, Entrepreneurship, Controlling (ManECo) China – Economy and Language (CHI) In the following, each of these specializations is presented by the table of modules.
