We are seeking a graduate student interested in evolutionary

We are seeking a graduate student interested in evolutionary ecology of
amphibians (FPI fellowship – Spain).
Background
Amphibians are key species in the trophic webs of temporary ponds. The
presence of predators, however, can modify the interactions between
amphibians and lower trophic levels by either reducing amphibian larval
densities or altering their phenotype (morphology, behavior, life
histories). Larval amphibians are capable of altering their development in
response to the presence of predators, producing anti-predator
morphologies, reducing activity levels, and/or accelerating metamorphosis.
We will compare the density-dependent and trait-mediated effects of
predators on larval amphibians and their consequences for the structure of
trophic webs. To this purpose we will use a highly multidisciplinary
approach combining field surveys, field, laboratory and mesocosm
experiments, quantitative and population genetics, and chemical and
endocrine analyses.
Description
The student will be expected to address and expand some of the aims of the
project, combining trophic ecology, population genetics, and developmental
evolutionary biology.
The position will last four years and the student is required to attain a
PhD degree during that time. The first two years are covered by a
fellowship that turns into a contract for the time remaining. During this
4-y period the student will be eligible for short stages (2-6 months) in
Spanish or foreign institutions that will allow for additional technical
or theoretical training as his/her research demands.
The approximate salary for the first two years would be 13,700 euros/year,
increasing to 16,400 in each of the last two years.
Skills and Requisites
- Bachelor degree (licenciado) in science (Biology, Environmental science,
etc), obtained no sooner than January 2005.
- Must be able to properly speak and write in English.
- Previous research experience will be highly regarded.
