Cardiovascular
System
The cardiovascular system is
sometimes called the circulatory
system. It is one of the most important
systems in the body. The
cardiovascular system is the body’s
delivery system. It delivers oxygen and
nutrients to every part of the body. It
also transports food, hormones, waste,
and gases to and from the cells.
What makes up the
Cardiovascular System?
 Blood
 Heart
 Blood Vessels
(“Circulatory System1”)
Leukemia
What is it?
 A type of cancer founding the
blood and bone marrow
What is the cause?
 Rapid production of abnormal
white blood cells
What are the risk factors?
 Exposure to high levels of
radiation
 Multiple exposures of certain
chemicals
 Chemotherapy
 Down Syndrome
 Family History
How it affects the organs of the
body?
 Decreases the oxygen supply by
interfering with the production
of red blood cells
 Makes tissue of the organs die
by the lack of oxygen
(“Leukemia”1)
Anemia
What is it?
 A condition in which the blood
has a lower than normal
number of red blood cells
 Can occur if red blood cells
don’t contain enough
hemoglobin(helps red blood
cells carry oxygen from the
lungs to the rest of the body)
What are the causes?
 Blood loss
 Lack of red blood cell
production
 High rates of red blood cell
destruction
How it affects the organs of the
body?
 Severe or long lasting anemia
can damage the heart, brain,
and other organs
 If it’s really severe it can cause
DEATH.
(“What is anemia?1”)
Hemophilia
What is it?
 Rare bleeding disorder that
ranges from mild to severe
depending on how much
clotting factor or on the blood
What are the causes?
 Genetic defect on X
chromosome
 Women get affected if both X’s
have defects
 Men get affected if X has defect
How does it affect the organs of
the body?
 Blood doesn’t clot properly
 Any cut or injury can bleed
excessively
 May suffer internal bleeding
that can damage joints, organs,
and tissues over time
(“Hemophilia: Signs, Symptoms, and Treatments”1)
(Bleeding disorder”1)
Treatments
Anemia:
 Diet Changes
 Iron Supplements
 Blood Transfusions
 Marrow Transplants
Hemophilia:
 Blood Transfusions with donor
blood or with synthetic blood
factors.
Leukemia:
 Chemotherapy
 Radiation Treatments
 Stem Cell Transplantations
