Dear Parents,

The children have been enjoying our unit on weather and have had many great questions and connections to our learning. We have not yet covered all the key concepts of our weather unit in class, but I wanted to send out a study guide for the chapter test in advance. The final assessment will take place on April 29 th

and 30 th

.

Please review the concepts below with your child in preparation. Be on the look-out for any weather related papers which come home in the children’s take-home folders. In addition, the students can use their text-book (pages D14-D17) to review the concept of the water cycle.

Thanks for your support!

Mrs. Timm

Weather Forecasting

 Be able to describe, in writing, the job of a meteorologist and why weather forecasting is important.

 Understand the basic tools of meteorology and what they are used for o wind vane, barometer (air pressure), anemometer (wind speed), thermometer, satellite

Clouds

 Be able to match cumulus (fair-weather, fluffy) stratus (low, dark), and cirrus

(high, thin), clouds with their corresponding pictures

Water Cycle

 Draw a picture of the water cycle and label it with the following terms:

condensation, precipitation, evaporation, and accumulation.

 Describe, in writing , the steps of the water cycle using the terms above and details to describe each step. I am looking for a topic sentence and a paragraph to describe each part of the water cycle. Remember, the water cycle never ends.

Weather vs. Climate

 Know that weather is what it is like outside day to day and climate is the kind of weather a place has in each season, year after year.

 Categorize weather and climate terms

Weather

Raining outside

Cloudy and windy

Partly sunny

Climate

Tropical area (Hot, humid, wet)

Dry, desert area (Little rain)
