REQUIREMENTS
A three stage badge
STAGE ONE
 Explain why it rains and why it sometimes
does not rain for a long time

Learn how to read a thermometer. Read a
thermometer at the same time each day for
seven days and record and plot the daily
temperatures.

Observe the weather conditions at the same
time each day for seven days and record
these conditions on a chart. Use pictures or
words like sunny, cloudy, rainy, windy,
overcast, drizzle, showers, rain, hail, storm.
Note Wind Direction & Temperature

Collect from newspapers, weather maps for
seven days and explain to the examiner
what they show.
STAGE TWO
 Make a simple rain gauge and record and
plot daily rainfall for 14 days.

Determine at least two methods of
determining wind directions without using
a weather vane

Explain how modern weather forecasting is
done and list some of the equipment which
is in use

Produce a chart on clouds and explain how
clouds may be used in forecasting weather
conditions

STAGE THREE
Do any four of the following:

Make a simple barometer. Use it to
measure the atmospheric pressure at the
same time each day for 14 days. Record
and plot the daily pressure.

Using a weather map as an aid, explain the
meaning of isobar, high & low pressure
and wind velocity

Build a weather vane and record the wind
direction daily at the same time for 14
days. Keep a record of the wind direction
and weather during this period.

Explain three ways which people use to
make predictions about the weather without
using scientific equipment.

Keep a sequence of weather satellite
pictures that have been reproduced in a
newspaper or magazine showing the
movement of a cyclone or rain depression
and discuss these with the examiner.

Draw a picture of a weather beacon and
explain to the examiner how it indicates the
state of the weather.
