Proposed number of placements: 3
Training Bases: Medway Maritime Hospital
Setting: The pharmacy provides services to wards, clinics and outpatients, as well as smaller
community hospitals and a hospice. Staff are friendly and always at hand to answer any questions
or offer advice. We offer an exciting and stimulating programme with an emphasis on clinical
training. Rotations include clinical (covering medicine, surgery, elderly care, haematology and
paediatrics), dispensary, purchasing and medicines information. Four weeks will be spent in our
newly expanded specialist aseptic suite, which is involved in cytotoxic reconstitution, CIVAS and
adult/baby TPN. We offer a PCT placement and time can be spent in areas of the hospital which
interest you, including working with other health care professionals. Provision can be made for you
to visit other hospitals to gain further insight into other specialist areas. You will be involved in our
ward-based pharmacy teams and will be expected to take on the role of pharmacist towards the
end of your placement. A pharmacist-run anticoagulation service operates in the hospital, and you
will be trained to counsel new patients on warfarin. A personal tutor will have weekly meetings to
provide support and guidance throughout the year. Accommodation may be available on site, if
required.
Location: The hospital is minutes away from Chatham, Gillingham and Rochester town centres.
There is a variety of shops and entertainment facilities available nearby, including Bluewater and
Lakeside. We have easy access to London (40 minutes by rail or road). Paris is a short hop on the
Eurostar.
