Archives Assistant Sophia Smith Collection (Limited-term 18 month position) The Sophia Smith Collection (SSC) of the Smith College Libraries seeks an Archives Assistant to assist the SSC professional and permanent manuscripts processing staff in all aspects of readying manuscript collections and organization records for research use. Responsibilities: draft detailed folder lists for series and subseries; compile information and write drafts of scope and content notes, biographical sketches and historical statements; identify sensitive materials and assist in setting access restrictions; create automated folder labels; apply basic preservation techniques; enter data into collections management database; perform reference service for collections she/he has processed; supervise student assistants and interns and other duties as assigned. Qualifications: two years of college plus six months of full-time employment or a combination of employment and internship processing manuscripts collections in an archives or manuscripts repository; or one year of related fulltime employment in a library or records center. Bachelor's degree in history, American Studies and some familiarity with US women's history preferred; strong organizational, analytical, writing, research, and interpersonal skills; ability to work independently and as a member of a team; strong attention to detail; ability to apply complex rules and procedures; experience with word processing, database entry, familiarity with InMagic or another archival description database software a plus; and the ability to lift and carry boxes of 35lbs.
