Katherine Lacy, clarinet
Brought up in Wrexham, North Wales, Katherine Lacy studied clarinet first at
Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester then at the Royal Academy of Music
in London, where she spent five years, both as an undergraduate and postgraduate student. As a student Katherine won many prizes and awards
including the Dennis Midwood Prize for Woodwind at Chetham’s and the RAM’s
prestigious Geoffrey Hawkes Clarinet Prize in her first year at the Academy.
Whilst at the Academy Katherine was selected to play the Mozart concerto with
the RAM Sinfonia in performances in London and Paris, as well as Stravinsky’s
“Ebony Concerto” with the RAM Wind Ensemble. She also gave the world
premiere of a bass clarinet and flute duet by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies with
renowned flautist the late Sebastian Bell.
As a soloist, Katherine has performed concertos with orchestras including the RLPO, the National Chamber
orchestra of Wales, Opus One Chamber Orchestra, the Lydian Orchestra in Kent and the Märkischer Kreis Youth
Orchestra in Germany and her chamber music career has taken her to venues such as St. Martin’s in the Field, St
James Piccadilly and most recently the Wigmore Hall, where she took part in an evening recital with the Linos Wind
Quintet.
Over the past five years Katherine has played with some of the country’s leading orchestras. She has played
principal clarinet with the LSO, CBSO, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Halle, Northern Sinfonia and London
Chamber Orchestra and has also worked with orchestras including London Sinfonietta, Philharmonia, BBC
Philharmonic and RSNO.
In January 2005 Katherine achieved her life-long ambition of becoming a full time member of an orchestra when she
joined the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra as Principal Bass Clarinet. As well as playing in the orchestra,
Katherine enjoys playing with the RLPO’s Fusion Wind Quintet and, of course, the Cerberus Trio! She is also actively
involved in the Phil’s education work and is the “Adopted Musician” of Kensington Infant School.
Katherine is extremely grateful for the support of the Oswestry Concert-Goers in sponsoring her chair in the
orchestra.
Ian Bracken, cello
Suffolk born Ian Bracken began playing the cello at the age of seven and by the time he was fifteen had become a
pupil of Leonard Stehn at the Guildhall School Of Music in London. As an undergraduate Ian played Principal cello
with all the Guildhall's orchestras including performances conducted by the legendary Russian cellist Rostropovich.
Before completing his Postgraduate studies Ian was appointed Assistant Principal cello of the RLPO. Outside his
duties with the RLPO Ian has remained active as a chamber musician and solo performer giving the premier of
several works written especially for him. He has also worked with other orchestras including the Royal Philharmonic
and Northern Sinfonia and has appeared on numerous pop records. An enthusiastic and committed teacher Ian has
both coached and adjudicated at the Guildhall and the Royal Northern College of Music. He regularly appears as a
chamber music coach in the North West and is also involved in the RLPO's “Music for Life" project.
When not working, Ian likes to relax by cooking, enjoying the great outdoors with his two sons and tending to his
chickens.
Ian plays on a Betts cello made in London c1800.
Ian Buckle, piano
Ian Buckle enjoys a busy and varied freelance career, working as soloist, accompanist, chamber musician,
orchestral pianist and teacher.
His London debut came in 1996 with a recital at Wigmore Hall and he has given recitals in numerous British festivals
including Buxton, Harrogate, Huddersfield and Lichfield, the Ribble Valley International Piano Week and in the
Bridgewater Hall for Manchester Midday Concerts. His most recent European appearances were at the 2007
Beethoven Festival in Bonn and the Festspiele Mecklenburg. He has performed and broadcast recitals in France,
Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Turkey and Canada; and has appeared on BBC radio and television, most
recently on the Radio 3 programme ‘In Tune’.
Ian is a member of the piano-and-woodwind ensemble Zephyr, the Cerberus Trio (with clarinet and cello); and the
Elysnan Horn Trio, formed as students at the Royal Northern College of Music. His commitment to contemporary
music is reflected in his work with the chamber groups Ensemble 10:10 and the Firebird Ensemble, and his piano
duo with Richard Casey specialises in music of the last- and current centuries. As an accompanist he is in constant
demand, performing and recording with singers and instrumentalists throughout the U.K. and in Europe. Ian
regularly plays orchestral piano in the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, and teaches at Leeds University.
Engagements in 2007-8 include concertos with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra of Opera North, the
RLPO, Sinfonia Viva and the Manchester Concert Orchestra; piano-duo recitals of music by Boulez, Finnissy and
Ligeti, a series of broadcasts with Ensemble 10:10, and concerts nationwide with BBC Young Musician winner Mark
Simpson. Recent recordings include CDs of Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” and solo- and chamber music by
Humphrey Procter-Gregg, and a disc of works for trombone and piano will be released soon. Forthcoming projects
include a disc of Schoenberg’s “Pierrot Lunaire” with the Firebird ensemble and numerous CDs of contemporary
works with Ensemble 10:10.
Ian holds a season ticket at Sheffield Wednesday Football Club, and is an enthusiast of French cinema and nice
restaurants.
“Outstanding… Buckle is a pianist whose precision, power, musicianship and enviable composure allow us to
experience the music without imposing superfluous affectation. His technique is dazzling, yet always in the service
of the composer. A memorable event.”
