
On the blackboard, sentence strip, or chart paper, the teacher will write
the following phrase:
A special memory I have about Summer Dreamers is:



The teacher will have the campers sitting in a circle and will share with
them his/her special memory.
Each camper in the circle will share with the class his/her special
memory of Summer Dreamers by using the above reference phrase as a
starter.
Another option to this activity is to have the campers write down their
special memory phrase and draw the memory on construction paper.
The teacher will have some of the campers share out their special
Summer Dreamers memories. All of the drawings will be posted
somewhere in the classroom and will serve as a Memories Wall
display.
Before beginning this activity: Write the names of all campers on
the board.
 Distribute SDA Award Voting handout and explain that campers
will vote for each other to determine who will receive some of
the awards on Wednesday.
 Campers should vote for up to 2 campers for each award. They
may vote for a camper more than once but they may not vote for
themselves.
 Campers should turn in their votes to a staff member and award
winners will be announced on Friday
Reread and
Review the
Story
Give each camper a book. Have campers whisper read aloud at
his or her own pace. Guide and prompt individuals as needed.
NOTE: While the goal is to have campers read independently,
depending on the campers the teacher may have some campers
whisper read out loud at their own pace while other campers may
need to partner read and others may need the support of the teacher.
Review
 Ask: What ask the main idea of the book? The main idea is
what the book is mostly about? (ex. Some plants and animals
eat flies)
 Ask: Why do you think the author wrote this story? (to tell
what kinds of things eat flies) We say that the author wants to
inform us or give us information about the kinds of things that
eat flies.

other books that campers have read throughout the summer.
 Campers can share their favorite stories in groups, with a
partner, or individually, or you may want to read some
selections to the whole class.
 Campers may also write sentences and draw pictures to go with
their favorite stories.
 Campers should be prepared to share their favorite stories as
well as any sentences or pictures they created, with the class
tomorrow, and, possibly, as part of the Gallery Walk on the last
day of camp.

and count the total number of words that they mastered over the course
of the summer.
 Tell campers that if they area a Jargon General, Term Trooper, or Word
Warrior they will receive their certificate and game(s) on Wednesday!
1. Jargon General: owns 6-8 words—earns a certificate

 Tell campers that tomorrow families and other campers will be invited
to see all of the work that has been done over the summer, and today they’ll
prepare for that visit.
 Tell campers that for the Gallery Walk campers will select their best
work to post around the room and in the hallway.
 Allow campers to choose some of their favorite and best work.
Encourage them to mount it on construction paper and/or add designs and
pictures to the page to prepare it for presentation. Campers may also want to
re-write some things to ensure that it is done in their best handwriting.
Remind campers that they really want to show off all of the work that
they’ve done, so they should try to prepare as many pieces of work as they
can.
 Make sure that campers know when they completed each activity (ex: to
go with a certain book) and what they learned by doing the activity (ex:
Word Warriors taught them new words and fluency activities helped them
become a better reader).
 After they have selected and perfected their work, you may want to
ask campers to give suggestions for where different types of activities should
be posted. Encourage them to think of creative ways to show the work, such
as hanging it from the ceilings
