Data Manager- Liver Service - Grade V

Accountability and Working Relationships
Title: Data Manager
- Liver Service - Grade V
Reports to: Professor Oscar Traynor, Head of Data Management
Responsible to: Professor Oscar Traynor, Head of Data Management
Job Summary:
This person will primarily be responsible for the implementation and ongoing
support of the components of the Liver Transplant Service. The Post holder will be
responsible for the accurate and timely input of pertinent data of all Liver patients
into a computerised information system. This will underpin the goals of the Liver
service in monitoring outcomes through data collection, analysis and
dissemination. This person will report directly to the liver team relating to day-today activities and to the Head of Data management for data management
responsibilities
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
- Implement process to efficiently collect data at relevant points throughout the
patient pathway.
- Ensure timely collection (input) and validation of data at unit level.
- To collect, store and retrieve clinical data for patients undergoing Liver
treatment under the care of the Liver unit in St. Vincent’s University Hospital.
- Responsible for data quality and integrity to ensure completeness of data entry
for the minimum data set.
- To ensure data checks and controls are in place.
- To ensure data definitions are developed and agreed with relevant personnel.
- To develop and document essential policies
- To support the Head Clinician and other relevant staff in the procurement of
accurate data.
- To manage data requests from other external sources (i.e. research purposes).
- To provide accurate and timely reports at unit level on an ongoing basis
- To create new reports when required.
- To provide support for clinicians and Nurses as well as support monthly MDT
meetings.
- To work with the Database Administrator Clerks and IT Personnel
- To organise and maintain a library of relevant literature.
- To assist in the development of annual unit service plan.
- To assist with preparation of unit reports and action plan.
- To be an expert in the new system implemented to the Liver Service.
- To assist in any further phases of development and implementation of
enhancements to the system.
- To provide ongoing training for staff in the use of the system
- To liaise with the Vendor of the system where required and appropriate.
- Any other duties associated to this post as required.
Skills:
- A tertiary qualification in a health discipline or in an area related to data
management analysis, or substantial relevant experience
- Ability to interpret medical terms/notes, nursing/medical/medical secretarial
experience an advantage.
- Experience in management data quality within a large database.
- Excellent organisational, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Interpersonal – the ability to work as part of a team and to establish good
working relationship with personnel at all levels.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Must be able to work on own initiative and effectively deal with problems in the
areas of responsibility
- Computer literacy, MS Office, experience in spreadsheet and statistical analysis
software.
- Skills in writing new reports
- Knowledge of data base schemas
- Committed to protecting personal privacy and confidentiality of personal
information.

Such records and information are strictly
confidential and, unless acting on the instruction of an authorised officer, such
information must not be divulged or discussed except in the performance of
normal duty. In addition records must never be left in such a manner that
unauthorised persons can obtain access to them and must be kept in safe custody
when no longer required.
Particulars of Office:






The appointment is wholetime, fixed term and pensionable:
Annual Salary: €42,658 - €51,617 per annum (Sept 2008 rates)
Probationary Period: The appointee shall hold office for a probationary
period of six months
The terms of the Voluntary Hospitals Superannuation Scheme (VHSS) and
the Voluntary Hospitals Spouses and Children’s Scheme will apply to this
position
The person appointed will work a basic 35 hour week. Flexibility on hours
of attendance in response to service needs will be a requirement
Annual leave entitlement: 26 working days
Please note the following:
 The Hospital Board is not responsible for loss or theft of personal
belongings
 Fire orders must be observed and staff must attend fire lectures
periodically
 All accidents within the department must be reported immediately
 In line with the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act (1989), smoking
within the Hospital building is not permitted
 All Staff are advised to avail of Hepatitis B Vaccination with Occupational
Health.
 The use of personal mobile phones is prohibited.
