COURSE OUTLINE A. PHRM 1001 Pharmacy Technician Orientation B. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will orient students to the basic principles of pharmacy practice. Students will become familiar with the role and working environment of the pharmacy technician, in both inpatient and outpatient settings. An introduction to the ethical, legal responsibilities and technical activities of the pharmacy technician will be presented for learning development. (3Cr - 3 lect, 0 lab) C. MAJOR CONTENT AREAS TO BE INCLUDED: 1. History of medicine and pharmacy 2. Role of the pharmacy technician 3. Introduction to pharmacy law and ethics 4. Quality assurance 5. Medication use evaluation 6. Medication errors 7. Drug information/resources 8. Professional pharmacy organizations 9. HIPPA 10. Board Certification 11. Pharmacy practice settings including retail, hospital, and non-traditional settings D. GOALS/GENERAL COMPETENCIES: To introduce students to the practice of pharmacy and the role of the pharmacy technician, including various practice settings. To develop the students’ understanding of the ethical and legal parameters within which pharmaceutical care, and health care in general, is practiced. To enable students to use health care and information resources, including the internet, to answer pharmacy-related questions. To introduce students to the fundamentals of pharmacy practice applications, including dosage forms, pharmacy calculations, prescription/order processing, repacking and compounding, aseptic technique, inventory management and billing.
