International Hydrological Programme (IHP)
The UNESCO international scientific co-operative
programme in hydrology and water resources, the
IHP, was established to act as a catalyst to
promote co-operation and research in the
management of water resources, an issue which
had been identified as a significant limiting factor
for harmonious development in many regions and
countries of the world.

SESSION 1: FLOODING
SEMINAR OBJECTIVE
Society is at risk of extreme hydrological events,
now more than ever before, as the frequencies of
extreme rainfall, fluvial and tidal flooding, as well
as droughts, appear to be on the increase.
Continued development on floodplains and coastal
reaches means that the risk of flood damage to
society is also increasing and implies added
pressure on water quantity and supply.
This Seminar aims to highlight the understanding
of hydrological extremes and to provide an insight
into approaches to their sustainable management.
