Autism
The Belleville Area Special Services Cooperative plays a leading role in the provision of quality special
education services for children with autism in Southern Illinois. Committed to the belief that each
student is unique, BASSC offers a creative continuum of specialized educational services for children
ages 3-21. Parents are regarded as welcome partners in the development of their child's special program.
Great care is taken to develop and maintain productive relationships with each child's family.
In accordance with state and federal legislation, the individualized educational plan drives the services
for each student. BASSC personnel are available to provide a range of technical/consultative assistance
to it 23-member school districts. An early childhood diagnostic team, which includes a pediatric
neurologist, is available to provide its expertise in the identification of any child who displays
characteristics of autism, Asperger's Syndrome, Rett's Syndrome, or any of the related pervasive
developmental disabilities.
Following the eligibility determination, a variety of placement options are available, varying in intensity
and location. All attempts are made to provide educational opportunities in the least restrictive
environment with students who are non-disabled. For children whose needs are more complex, BASSC
offers several self- contained classrooms. These programs are located in public school settings in various
locations within the boundaries of its cooperative districts. Each of these classrooms has been designed
to be sensitive to the complex needs of children with autism and the related spectrum disorders. These
programs offer highly structured, individualized and intensive instruction to small groups of students.
Using a synchronized, multidisciplinary teaching approach, emphasis is placed on establishing
functional communication and adaptive social behaviors. Staff are specially trained and conversant in
best practices for children with autism.
An array of specialized related services and technical assistance is available to these children as their
needs warrant them. BASSC has available speech/language therapy, music therapy, augmentative
communication strategies, consultation in applied behavior analysis and interventions, sensory
integration therapy, occupational, and physical therapy. When noted on the IEP, special transportation
arrangements are made. For students who require close supervision, individual care aides are available.
BASSC sponsors an ongoing Learning Series for parents and professionals who wish to learn more
about the autism spectrum disorders. Internationally recognized speakers have provided invaluable
information in the areas of differential diagnostics, medical and treatment options, as well as Asperger's
Syndrome.
