NZQA registered unit standard 11961 version 7 Page 1 of 4 Title Handle and store hazardous substances in the workplace Level 3 Purpose Credits 4 This unit standard is for people who handle and store hazardous substances in the workplace. These people are not Hazardous Substances Approved Handlers. People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of handling and storage of hazardous substances, and handle and store hazardous substances in the workplace. Classification Occupational Health and Safety > Occupational Health and Safety Practice Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 References Legislative requirements in this unit standard include – Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992; Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996. 2 Definitions Organisational requirements – instructions to candidates on policies and procedures which are documented in memo or manual format. These requirements include but are not limited to – site-specific requirements and any quality management requirements. Hazardous substance – any substance that has one or more of the following properties (explosive, flammable, ability to oxidize, corrosiveness, toxicity, ecotoxicity) when above specified levels. A hazardous substance can have more than one hazardous property such as petrol which is flammable and toxic. 3 Range Safe handling practices may include but are not limited to – precautions, clothing, equipment, containers, packaging, labelling, filling containers, use of approved transport, combinations of goods and substances, disposal, container cleaning. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Demonstrate knowledge of handling and storage of hazardous substances in the workplace. Range 1.2 Safe handling practices for hazardous substances are explained in terms of organisational and legislative requirements. Range 1.3 requirements include but are not limited to – safe handling practices relating to hazardous substances handled and stored in the candidate’s workplace. Actions for dealing with spillages and leakages of different classes of hazardous substances are explained in terms of organisational and legislative requirements. Range 1.4 classes include but are not limited to – symbols, labelling, properties, effects on people or property, material safety data sheets. actions include but are not limited to – actions relating to hazardous substances handled and stored in the candidate’s workplace. Storage requirements for hazardous substances are identified and explained in terms of organisational and legislative requirements. Range storage requirements include but are not limited to – storage requirements relating to hazardous substances stored in the candidate’s workplace. Outcome 2 Handle hazardous substances in the workplace. Evidence requirements 2.1 Hazardous substances are handled in accordance with safe work practices. Range 2.2 safe work practices include but are not limited to – protection of self and others, compliance with organisational and legislative requirements. Handling of hazardous substances is recorded in accordance with organisational and legislative requirements. Outcome 3 Store hazardous substances in the workplace. Range evidence is required for storage of two different hazardous substances. Range 3.4 Storage of hazardous substances is recorded in accordance with organisational and legislative requirements.
