Kashmir set like a jeweled crown on the map of India, is a multi-faceted diamond, changing its hues with
the seasons - always extravagantly beautiful. Two major Himalayan ranges, the Great Himalayan Range
and the Pir Panjal, surround the landscape from the north and south respectively. They are the source of
great rivers, which flow down to the valleys, forested with orchards and decorated by lily-laden lakes.
The capital city of Srinagar is located 1585 meters above mean sea level. According to a popular legend
which is mentioned in Kalhana's Rajtaringini Kashmir valley was a vast lake. Kashyap Rishi drained out
the water and made it habitable. It is said that originally Yakshas, and Pisacas tribes inhabited the valley
at the higher reaches and did not allow the inhabitants of the valley to live in peace.
Ladakh is a land abounding in awesome physical features, set in an enormous and spectacular
environment. Bounded by two of the world's mightiest mountain ranges, the Karakoram in the north and
the Great Himalaya in the south, it is traversed by two other parallel chains, the Ladakh Range and the
Zanskar Range. In geological terms, this is a young land, formed few million years ago. Its basic
contours, uplifted by tectonic movements, have been modified over the millennia by the process of
erosion due to wind and water, sculpted into the form that we see today. Today a high-altitude desert,
sheltered from the rain-bearing clouds of the Indian monsoon by the barrier of the Great Himalaya,
Ladakh was once covered by an extensive lake system, the vestiges of which still exist on its south-east
plateau of Rupshu and Chushul, in the drainage basins of lakes of Tso-moriri, Tso-kar and Pangong-tso.
4 High Passes: From East to West Himalayas is 2500 km in length and it is divided as the Eastern
Himalayas, the Central Himalayas and the Western Himalayas. From North to South its width is between
300-400 km and is divided as the Shivalik or the outer Himalayas, the Lower Himalayas, the High
Himalayas and the Trans Himalayas. You can experience the formation of the Himalayas in this tour
covering roughly around 750 km of the Himalayan region. This tour brings you over 4 high passes
namely, Zoji La (3529 m) Fotu La (4108 m) and Namika La (3718 m) and Chang-La (5360 m).

Compassion and Mercy – of which Dalai Lama is considered to be reincarnated. We make a quick photo-stop at Moonland before we continue our journey to Alchi. In the

monastery in his biographies. It is written that he brought thirty-two sculptors and wood carvers from Kashmir, for the construction of the Alchi Monastery of Leh Ladakh.
One can easily see an Indian touch in this monastery, especially in the way its paintings have been made. Three sacred temples, with the main one being that of Rinchen
SHE-8D-MAN-LAD-S13
Lhakhang at Lotsa Lhakhang, make up a major part of the Alchi Gompa. However, there are other temples also, namely Jamyang Lhakhang (Manjusri temple) and
