Brief description of the Marine Institute:
The Marine Institute (MI) is a non-commercial semi-state body, which was formally established by statute
(Marine Institute Act, 1991) in October 1992.
Under the Act, the Marine Institute was given the responsibility:
“to undertake, to co-ordinate, to promote and to assist in marine research and development and to
provide such services related to marine research and development, that in the opinion of the Institute will
promote economic development and create employment and protect the marine environment ”.
The Marine Institute is the national agency responsible for marine research, technology, development
and innovation (RTDI). The Marine Institute seeks to assess and realise the economic potential of
Ireland’s 220 million acre marine resource; promote the sustainable development of marine industry
through strategic funding programmes and scientific services; and safeguard the marine environment
through research and environmental monitoring.
The Institute works in conjunction with the
Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine (DAFM) and a network of other Government Departments,
semi-state agencies, national and international marine partners.

in our services “
In order to achieve this vision, the MI have six service areas; (1) Ocean Science and Information Services,
(2) Marine Environment & Food Safety Services, (3) Fisheries Ecosystems Advisory Services, (4) Irish
Maritime Development Office, (5) Office of the CEO and (6) Corporate Services.

Harnessing our Ocean Wealth (HOOW) is an Integrated Maritime Plan (IMP) for Ireland. HOOW sets out
a roadmap for the Irish Government’s vision, high level goals and integrated actions across policy,
governance and business to enable our marine potential to be realised. Goal 2 of HOOW focuses on
healthy marine ecosystems and specifically; to protect and conserve our rich marine biodiversity and
ecosystems; manage our living and non-living resources in harmony with the ecosystem; implement and

Description of appropriate Service Group:
Ocean Science and Information Services provide support for national and international marine
monitoring and research and development as well as Information Technology infrastructure and
information management.
The team carries out activities in the following areas:
Research Vessel Operations
Research Vessel Operations manage the Marine Institute’s research fleet, which includes the RV Celtic
Explorer, the RV Celtic Voyager and the National deepwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Holland 1.
The Research Vessel Operations team are also responsible for managing the foreign research vessel
notification process.
Advanced Seabed Mapping
Advanced Seabed Mapping carries out hydrographic and geophysical surveys for INFOMAR (INtegrated
mapping FOr the sustainable development of Irelands MArine Resource), and associated marine projects.
Oceanography and Ocean Modelling
Oceanography and Ocean Modelling provide comprehensive oceanographic services, within the Marine
Institute and externally to industry, third level partners and the public.
The team are responsible for the operation and maintenance of the National Weather Buoy Network,
Tide Gauge Network and Ocean Energy test sites around the Irish coast. The team also provide forecasts
of marine conditions on a daily basis.
Information Services & Development
The Information Services & Development team are responsible for the co-ordination of Marine Institute
data activities and the provision of Information Technology infrastructure and information management
for the Marine Institute. The team aims to ensure that data resources within the Marine Institute are
made available to as wide an audience as possible through on line and other data services in accordance
with e-Government policy.
Advanced Technology Programme
The Advanced Marine Technology Programme is part of Sea Change, Ireland’s marine research and
innovation strategy. It seeks to create a critical mass, multi-disciplinary and industry-oriented research
grouping in the area of advanced sensing, communications and informatics.
Summary of the Role:
The Stagiaire Programme (Marine Institute Student Programme for recent graduates) is designed to
enable recent graduates to gain work experience in an area in which they are interested. As part of
Ocean Science and Information Services, you will provide administrative support to the Marine Institute/
POMS technical team in the management and delivery of technical services for the National Weather
Buoy Network and the Ocean Energy test sites.
This Stagiaire position is an excellent training opportunity for a recent graduate of marine science or a
related subject.

Background to Requirement:
The Stagiaire Programme (Marine Institute Student Programme for recent graduates) is designed to
enable recent graduates to gain work experience in an area in which they are interested. Assignments
may also be carried out at other Marine Institute locations from time to time. When absent from home
and place of work on duty you will be paid appropriate travelling expenses and subsistence allowances.
Before any motor travel is undertaken for business purposes, you will be required to ensure that your
insurance includes business use or carry an indemnity clause in your certificate of insurance for business
use.
Principal Tasks:








General administrative duties supporting the Research Vessel Operations team (RV Ops)
Assist in the day to day procurement of items required for the Ocean Energy and Weather Buoy
Network Programmes including Purchase Order initiation, follow-up with potential suppliers,
tracking deliveries.
Maintaining a quality system for Marine Operations for the various infrastructures operated by
the team including pre-deployment checklists, calibration tracking, instrument whereabouts.
Provide telephone support and take messages on behalf of RV Ops
Process orders for equipment or other items relating to RV Ops.
Act as recording secretary at technical meetings.
Cataloguing and filing of documentation related to the work programmes.
Any other duties assigned from time to time, appropriate to the position.
Reporting Structure:
The successful candidate will report to the Scientific and Technical Officer in Research Vessel Operations
and the OSIS Administrator on a day to day basis.

Within the Marine Institute:
Section Manager and Scientific and Technical Officer, Oceanographic Services, & Staff of OSIS; and staff
of the Institute.
External:
Regular liaison with suppliers, P&O Maritime Services’ technicians and stakeholders in the infrastructure
e.g. Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, Department of Transport Tourism and Sport as required.
Training
A full range of training will be provided as required, on the job and through appropriate
courses. Training needs will be identified through the MI Performance Management
Development System (PMDS).

Education, Professional or Technical Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, Aptitudes,
Experience, and Training
Essential:











A recent graduate (last 2 years) with a minimum of a degree in marine science, engineering, IT or
business (or related subject).
Strong administration and organisational skills with good attention to detail.
The ability to be well organised and work to deadlines identifying priorities and managing time
effectively.
Effective numerical and literacy skills.
Strong analytical and data skills.
A high level of computer literacy (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet/Email).
Strong interpersonal skills.
The ability to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally at all levels.
The ability to work unsupervised and to work well with others.
Good written and verbal communication skills.
A full clean driving licence and own transport.
Desirable:


Some familiarity with Marine industry.
Knowledge of Public Sector Procurement / budget tracking

Salary:
Remuneration is in accordance with the Marine Institute Stagiaire Graduate Training Programme with a
stipend of €21,850 per annum pro-rated with time worked. This temporary training position does not
include membership of the Marine Institute Pensions schemes.
Annual Leave:
Annual leave entitlement for a Stagiaire is 22 working days per annum. Annual leave entitlement for this
position will be pro-rated in accordance with the duration of the contract awarded. Annual leave
entitlements are exclusive of Public Holidays.
Duration of Contract:
The fixed term, fixed purpose Graduate Training contract will be for a maximum period of 50 weeks. The
successful candidate will be on probation for the first 6 months of this training contract.
